Kea Trails

Kea is an island with immense natural beauty and imposing landscapes.

An important feature of the island, which is almost always present, is the large altitude differences. It is a small island, about 17 km in diameter, with the highest point being Profitis Ilias (568m).

The routes of Kea are old paths, which had the purpose of traversing the rugged island, following at the same time the shortest routes possible. The road network in this case, was not able to follow the paths, due to the steep slopes. This fact has kept the old paths in fairly good condition, especially those that are paved with cobblestones. The paths of the Tzia (Kea) network are, as a result of the above, linear, which means that the routes should either be walked back and forth, from the starting points, or there should be a means of transport that will pick up the hikers from the end of a route. In combination with the large altitude differences, the descent and then the ascent of these routes increases to a great extent the total kilometers, but also the difficulty level of the routes.

Based on the above, the island of Kea could well be suggested as a backpacking destination, so that many of the returns are eliminated. After all, most of the island and most important destinations are covered and served by the marked hiking network, let alone the other trails that have not yet been marked.
