Between Lienz and the Paternion power plant, the Drau flows freely for 85 kilometers without any dams. A beautiful stretch. We launch in Lienz at the Kosakenfriedhof. A dear friend of Vroni shuttled us, carried the boat, and even pumped it up. Thank you!!
The river flows fast; the description said: "Not a beginner river." Since we believe we made the beginner mistakes on the Enns, we paddle cheerfully and carefree - and after the first 50 meters, we get stuck on a rock in the middle of the river! We overlooked the white foaming wave behind it. Jumping, paddling strokes, and pushing, we finally break free after what feels like an eternity, naturally right into the wave. It’s small enough to free us without capsizing.
It must have looked very funny!
The rest is - paddling. Ducks, dippers, herons, cows, anglers, water, you and me.
Sometimes the oars rest comfortably, and the landscape flows past us.
We dock at the Sachsenburg campsite; our tent is here, and there is a good restaurant.
The 2nd day is sunny and warmer. The route still has tributaries and mild rapids; it remains exciting - until the Drau becomes wide and sluggish into a green lake due to the backwater from the Paternion power plant.
Therefore, for the finale: 10km paddling without current. Some exercise is necessary!

In Erpfendorf we find a good entry point to the Tiroler Ache. A large raft with men and crates of beer is also launched onto the water! We quickly overtake it, as well as other kayak groups. We paddle through Kössen towards Entenlochklamm. There, the river winds through steep rock faces and we cross the border into Germany. We find a nice gravel bank to camp and swim. Some other kayakers pass us, including the large raft with the already cheerful group of men. When the sun disappears behind the clouds, we continue paddling, past Schleching to the previously inspected exit point at Unterwössen/Rait. An exciting boat tour that makes you want more!
