The Vélan hut (Cabane du Vélan) is located at 2642 m above Bourg-Saint-Pierre at the foot of Mont Vélan. The modern SAC hut is the starting point for high-altitude tours and ski tours in the Mont Vélan area.
The Vélanhütte, officially Cabane du Vélan, is located at 2642 m north of Mont Vélan above Bourg-Saint-Pierre in Entremont in the canton of Valais. The modern hut of the SAC Geneva section sits spectacularly on a moraine above the Vallon de Valsorey and can be reached from the village in around three hours and around 1000 meters in altitude. It is usually open from mid-March to mid-May and from mid-June to mid-September and is mainly used as a base for ski tours in winter and for mountain hikes and high-altitude tours on Mont Vélan in summer, as well as for crossings to the Cabane de Valsorey. During the hut season, around sixty beds with comforters are available in multi-bed rooms, supplemented by a small winter room outside the manned period. The architecture, with its futuristic, almost oval shape and titanium-zinc façade, also makes the hut attractive to those interested in architecture. The first Vélanhütte was opened in 1944, destroyed by fire in 1991 and rebuilt in its current form in 1993. As in all alpine areas, current conditions, possible route closures and the weather forecast should always be checked carefully before embarking on a tour.

Rooms

In the manned season, the Vélanhütte offers around 60-64 beds in simple multi-bed rooms with Nordic comforters; you must bring your own sleeping bag and pillowcase. Overnight stays are only possible with prior reservation, the hut is usually run on a half-board basis. There is a small play area for children, and the dining room is cozy and functional. Outside the season, there is only a simple winter shelter with a limited number of places available, without gas, electricity or water; those who use it must be fully equipped themselves. The hut team asks you to use resources sparingly; the water available is not considered drinkable and is sometimes supplied in bottles. Payment is made exclusively in cash in Swiss francs, mobile phone coverage is only partial and is currently limited to the Sunrise network.

Food and drink

During the hut season, half-board with evening menu and breakfast is offered; during the day, day guests can also stop in between 12 and 3 pm. Typical Valais specialties such as rösti, fondue, omelettes and simple pasta dishes are served.

Directions

From the village of Bourg-Saint-Pierre, the marked mountain trail initially leads along the road and track towards the two huts, past the Chalet d'Amont and over Alp Cordonna. It then runs through the Vallon de Valsorey, crosses the stream on a bridge and climbs in hairpin bends over a moraine up to the Vélan hut situated on a rocky ridge; you should plan around three hours' walking time for around 6.7 km and just under 1000 meters in altitude.

Parking

By car, drive via Martigny in the direction of Grosser St-Bernard as far as Bourg-Saint-Pierre. There is a free parking lot at the town hall, which serves as the starting point for the hike to the Vélan hut. If you follow the small road in the direction of Valsorey, you will find only a few quickly occupied parking spaces further up; it is generally recommended that you leave your car in the village and start from there.
