As the name suggests, the Vélan Hut is the usual base camp for ascending Mont Vélan, a beautiful glacier-covered mountain south of the Grand Combin. In the spring, it can get quite busy here, as the ascent and subsequent descent across vast glacier fields is a ski tour that’s rightly very popular. In the summer, things are much quieter, although the ascent is very varied and the view of the south face of the Grand Combin is truly breathtaking—especially when you get to experience the morning and evening light up here. From the outside, the hut looks very futuristic, but inside it’s very cozy, with plenty of wood in the design.
From the bus stop in Bourg-St-Pierre, we first walk through the village to the church, where we turn left toward the highway, which we cross via an underpass; just beyond it, we come to the road leading to Valsorey. The trail cuts across two wide hairpin turns of the road on the meadow slope, and we now return to an alpine road leading to the huts of Alpe Cordonna. We continue along the sunny slope until we reach a small gorge. We pass through the flank above the gorge and soon reach the alluvial plain at the confluence of the streams from the Valsorey and Tseudet glaciers (here, the steep ascent to the Cabane de Valsorey on the Grand Combin branches off to the left, past the Chalet d’Amont).Our trail leads to the right toward the bridge and into a valley basin formed by the lateral moraine of the Tseudet Glacier. In wide switchbacks, the trail climbs up to the moraine ridge, where a dramatic view down to the glacier tongue opens up. From there, it’s just another 100 meters of
