È situato al limite sud orientale del Vallon Popèra, appena sopra la caratteristica cascata del Rìsena, circondato dalle imponenti pareti della Croda Rossa, Cima Undici, Cima Bagni, Campanili, Fulmini e Monte Popèra, montagne di straordinaria aspra bellezza. È punto d'appoggio lungo l'Alta via delle Dolomiti n. 5, variante 2, di partenza delle splendide vie attrezzate Róghel e Cengia Gabriella, Strada degli Alpini, Zandonella alla Croda Rossa, di innumerevoli arrampicate in stile classico e di escursioni su percorsi della prima guerra mondiale.
La cucina è casalinga, anche con piatti tipici di Casamazzagno (mes, fritli, zopi). All’interno del rifugio piccola esposizione di reperti della Grande Guerra.
