Kleine Schutzhütte im Herzen der Picos de Europa

Cabaña Verónica ist eine kleine Schutzhütte, die sich auf 2325 m Höhe, am Fuße des Berges Pico Tesorero, im Zentralmassiv der Picos de Europa, in der nordspanischen Autonomen Gemeinschaft von Kantabrien befindet. Sie wurde nach einer der Töchter des Bauträgers, Conrado Sentíes, genannt. Dieser erbaute zusammen mit dem befreundeten Architekten Luis Pueyo die nur 9 m² große Kuppel aus den Überresten der Flugabwehrbatterie eines USS Flugzeugträgers. Die 1961 errichtete Metallkuppel ist heute eine beliebte Anlaufstelle für Bergsteiger in den Picos de Europa. Das war aber nicht immer so. Über viele Jahre stand sie verlassen inmitten der beeindruckenden Bergkulisse, bis sich 1983 der damals 34 Jahre alte Bergsteiger Mariano Sánchez Madina dort einnistete und sich ehrenamtlich um den Erhalt der Hütte und das Hochtragen der nötigen Materialien und Ausrüstung kümmerte. Im Jahr 2007 erkrankte der Hüttenwirrt und verstarb ein Jahr später in einer Klinik im Tal. Eine Gedenktafel an der Hütte erinnert heute an ihn. Auf ihr steht der Spruch, den er immer hinterließ, wenn er kurz nicht anwesend war.

Die Cabaña Verónica ist von Ostern bis Oktober geöffnet, und verfügt über 11 Schlafplätze in Stockbetten. Der Hüttenwirt bietet Essen und Getränke (kalte und warme) an. Die Plätze können zuvor telefonisch reserviert werden. Die Hütte verfügt zusätzlich über die nötige Ausrüstung für eine Bergrettung, über eine Radiostation des Zivilschutzes und über eine Wetterstation der Spanischen Nationalparks. Es befindet sich keine Wasserquelle in der Nähe.
