The Refuge de Tête Rousse is located at 3167 m in the Mont Blanc massif above Saint-Gervais. The CAF hut is a central base on the normal route to Mont Blanc.
The Refuge de Tête Rousse is located at around 3167 m on the Tête Rousse glacier in the Mont Blanc massif, in the municipality of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains in Haute-Savoie. The hut belongs to the Saint-Gervais section of the Club Alpin Français (FFCAM) and is open from 29 May to 3 October 2026; outside of this period, an unguarded winter room with significantly reduced capacity is open. In summer, it offers 72 sleeping places in several camps, and around a dozen places in the winter room. Simple but plentiful meals and a daily snack are offered to alpinists passing through. The hut can be reached from Nid d'Aigle, the terminus of the Tramway du Mont Blanc, in around two to two and a half hours over an altitude difference of around 800 meters; alternatively, a long ascent of around 1800 meters takes around four hours from the hamlet of Bionnassay. The refuge is an important base on the normal French route via the Goûter hut and the Dôme du Goûter to Mont Blanc and also serves as a starting point for the Aiguille de Bionnassay. In the high-altitude touring season from June to September and on variants of the Tour du Mont Blanc, it is a much-used staging post. As access is via high alpine terrain with glacier passages and exposed sections, mountaineers should plan their tour carefully and check current weather reports, conditions, closures and regulations from the authorities in advance. The hut was first built in 1934; between 2002 and 2005, a modern new building was constructed that better meets the increased requirements for capacity, safety and environmental protection.

Rooms

Overnight accommodation is provided in several dormitories with a total of 72 beds; there are around 12 mattresses available in the unattended winter room. Reservations are compulsory and valid until 5 p.m. on the day of arrival, blankets and pillows are provided, and you are required to bring your own sleeping bag or ticking for hygiene reasons. There are toilets inside and outside the building, but no running water or showers. A separate crampon and boot room with lockers makes it easier to store equipment, and hut shoes are provided. Payment can be made in cash, by cheque or by bank card; it is recommended that you always have two means of payment with you. Wi-Fi is available to guests during the season, but mobile phone coverage is not always reliable in the high alpine environment.

Food and drink

The cuisine is simple, but tailored to mountaineers: during the day there is a snack service with hot dishes such as pasta and omelettes, in the evening a standard menu is served at 6:30 pm. Breakfast is served in two very early shifts, vegetarian options are available by prior arrangement; vegan menus cannot be provided.

Public transport

By public transport, you usually travel by train or bus to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains (Le Fayet) and change there to the Tramway du Mont Blanc. The cog railroad takes you to the Nid d'Aigle terminus at 2372 m; from there, the marked high-altitude trail leads up to the Refuge de Tête Rousse in around two to two and a half hours.

Directions

From Nid d'Aigle, the mountain station of the Tramway du Mont Blanc, follow the path over the Désert de Pierre Ronde, pass the small base of Les Rognes and then ascend to the hut via a partly exposed ridge and the Tête Rousse glacier. This classic approach takes around 800 vertical meters and two to two and a half hours. A much longer alternative begins in the hamlet of Bionnassay above Saint-Gervais: from there, an alpine trail with an altitude difference of around 1800 meters leads up to the hut in around four hours, on which crampons may be required depending on the conditions.

Parking

Those who choose to take the cog railroad usually park in the designated parking lots at the valley stations of the Tramway du Mont Blanc in Le Fayet or Saint-Gervais; although parking is free, it is limited, especially in high season. For the long ascent on foot, the Crozat parking lot at the upper edge of the hamlet of Bionnassay is ideal, from where the marked mountain trail leads towards Col de Voza and on to the upper end of the valley.
