At 4,805 meters, Mont Blanc is the highest peak in the Alps and the highest mountain in Western Europe. Few other mountains epitomize the history of alpinism as much as Mont Blanc, while also attracting the large numbers of visitors characteristic of modern mountaineering. The standard route from the French side leads via the Aiguille du Goûter and is considered technically moderate; however, due to the altitude, the partially exposed terrain, and objective perils, it is by no means an easy high-altitude climb. It connects the approach via the Tête-Rousse Glacier with the rocky ascent to the Aiguille du Goûter and the long firn ridge over the Dôme du Goûter, Grande and Petite Bosse, and the Bosses Ridge to the summit.
