Das Helmut Erd-Schutzhaus (auch Zirbitzkogelhütte) ist das höchst gelegene Schutzhaus in der Steiermark. Zwei Gaststuben sowie eine Sonnenterrasse laden zum Ausruhen und Verweilen ein. Im Winter ist der Zirbitzkogel als Schitourengebiet sehr beliebt. Das älteste Schutzhaus des ÖTK wird im Winter je nach Wetterlage und im Sommer von Ende Juni bis Ende September durchgehend bewirtschaftet.
Das erste und älteste Schutzhaus des ÖTK
Die Gründungsväter des ÖTK, Gustav Jäger und Lambert Märzroth, hatten bei einem ihrer Ausflüge im Jahr 1870 den starken Touristenbesuch auf dem Zirbitzkogel und den dadurch notwendig gewordenen Bedarf an einer Unterkunftsstätte festgestellt. Seine Verwirklichung wurde sofort in Angriff genommen. Geichzeitig wurde auch eine Verbesserung der Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten und Aufstellung von Wegweisertafeln am Zirbitzkogel veranlaßt. Vom Benediktiner-Ordensstift St. Lambrecht wurde der Baugrund überlassen. Johann Gogg, Pfarrer von St. Wolfgang, übernahm die Bauleitung. Die Zirbitzkogelhütte ist das erste und älteste Schutzhaus des ÖTK. Am 9. Oktober 1870, nach nur viermonatiger Bauzeit, konnte das Zirbitzkogelschutzhaus eröffnet werden. Der ehem. massive Steinbau bot 50 Personen Raum und gewährte den Ersteigern des vielbesuchten Aussichtsberges erhöhte Sicherheit bei hereinbrechendem Schlechtwetter. Im August 2000 verunglückte der ehem. Präsident des ÖTK, Min.-Rat Dr. Helmut Erd. Im September 2001 wurde ihm zu Ehren und in Würdigung seiner großen Verdienste das Zirbitzkogelschutzhaus in »Helmut-Erd-Schutzhaus« umbenannt.
Zirbitzkogel
Zwischen der Steiermark und Kärnten liegt in Österreich der höchsten Gipfel der Lavanttaler und Seetaler Alpen – der Zirbitzkogel. Mit seinen 2.396 m Seehöhe ist er ein ausgezeichneter Aussichtsberg, der Wanderern traumhafte Fernsichten in die Steiermark, nach Kärnten und über den Naturpark Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen ermöglicht. Seinen Namen hat der Zirbitzkogel nicht von den im Gebiet wachsenden Zirbenbäumen, sondern vom slowenischen Wort „zirbiza“, das mit „Rote Alm“ übersetzt werden kann. Dies weist auf die Alpenrose (auch Almrausch genannt) und das Heidekraut hin, die in den Sommer-Monaten wachsen und die Alm rot glühen lassen.
Wanderer, Bergstieger & Tourengeher
Dank seiner Vielzahl an Wanderrouten, ist der Zirbitzkogel ein beliebtes Ziel für Wanderer und Tourengeher. Dich erwarten Wanderwege mit unterschiedlichen Schwierigkeitsgraden, die sich von der Steiermark bis nach Kärnten erstrecken. So kannst du gemütlich von Hütte zu Hütte wandern, oder richtig bergwandern – bis zum Gipfelkreuz und dem Zirbitzkogel-Schutzhaus.
Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten
Nur 20 Höhenmeter und wenige Gehminuten unter dem Gipfel des Zirbitzkogels befindet sich das Zirbitzkogel-Schutzhaus des ÖTK mit Nächtigungsmöglichkeit in Mehrbettlagern. Eine Schlafplatz-Reservierung - speziell an den Wochenenden und zur Ferienzeit - ist unbedingt zu empfehlen. Der Winterraum ist ganzjährig geöffnet, bietet jedoch keine Heiz- und Kochgelegenheit.
Trinken & Essen
Die auf 2376 müA gelegene Hütte wird offiziell als Helmut-Erd-Schutzhaus bezeichnet und von "Zirbitz-Werni" bewirtschaftet. Die deftige Jause oder die kräftige Bergsteigersuppe haben schon manch müdem Wanderer wieder auf die Beine geholfen. Wanderfrühstück, regionales Speisenangebot, vegetarische Angebote, Gemüsesuppe, Frankfurter, Krainer, Steirerkäsebrot, Bretteljause, Speckjause, Strudel (Marillen oder Heidelbeer). Getränkeangebot: Bier, Rot- und Weißwein, div. Schnäpse, Frucade, Almdudler, Schiwasser, Glühwein, versch. Tees, Kaffee. Eine Wanderjause ist gegen Gebühr erhältlich.
Zirbenschnaps: gesund und gut
Unbedingt empfehlenswert ist der Zirbenschnaps (Zirbenlikör), der aus Zirbenzapfen hergestellt wird. Man schneidet die noch unreifen Zirbenzapfen in Scheiben mit einer Dicke von etwa drei bis fünf Millimetern. Diese werden dann in einen Kornbrand oder Obstbrand eingelegt und für ein bis zwei Monate dort gelassen. In dieser Zeit wird der Schnaps alle paar Tage gerührt oder geschüttelt. Danach wird der mittlerweile braun gefärbte Schnaps gefiltert und idR mit Zucker oder Honig vermischt, um den recht herben Geschmack zu mildern.
