The Grialetschhütte SAC is located at 2542 m in the Grialetsch area between Davos and the Lower Engadine, high above the Dischma Valley. It belongs to the Davos section of the Swiss Alpine Club and, following extensive renovation, presents itself as a modern, yet simple mountain hut with lots of wood and four impressive murals based on motifs by Giovanni Segantini. It is open in the winter season for ski tours from around March to April and in summer from mid-June to mid-October; in between, a winter room is open for self-catering. During the day, the hut offers hot meals throughout the day, while in the evening a standard half-board menu is served for overnight guests, as described in a test report with soup and pasta. The easiest way to reach the hut in summer is from Dürrboden at the back of the Davos Dischma Valley: in around one and a half hours and an altitude difference of around 540 meters, a marked mountain trail leads over the Furggasee lake and the Fuorcla da Grialetsch before the hut emerges with views of the Schwarzhorn, Piz Sarsura and the surrounding glaciers. Alternatively, there are longer approaches from Teufi, from the Flüela Pass or from the Engadin. In winter, the Grialetschhütte is a stage stop on the Bündner Haute Route and a classic destination for ski tours; in summer, it is on the Kesch Trek and is also suitable for family-friendly multi-day tours. Due to the high alpine location, all tours should be planned carefully and current conditions, possible closures and weather developments should be checked before setting off.

Rooms

Following its recent renovation, the Grialetschhütte offers 58 beds in simple, renovated rooms with three to eight beds, a twin room and a larger storage room with 15 beds. Blankets and pillows are provided, but a thin sleeping bag is obligatory for hygienic reasons. A new sanitary area with toilets, showers and washrooms increases comfort, while retaining the typical character of an SAC mountain hut. Outside of the serviced periods, a winter room with around ten sleeping places is available, which can only be used after prior reservation via the online portal. There is deliberately no internet connection in the hut and virtually no cell phone reception in the surrounding area, which contributes to the quiet, secluded atmosphere. The hut team asks that all overnight stays be booked online in advance; dinner is served at 6.30 pm.

Food and drink

During the day, the serviced hut serves simple, warm mountain cuisine throughout the day; in the evening, overnight guests can enjoy a multi-course half-board menu with hearty dishes such as soup and pasta. Breakfast is included in the half-board price and provides a good start to the next stage.

From the Engadin side, the journey is possible via the Rhaetian Railway to Susch and by post bus to the stops on the Flüela Pass road.

Directions

The most popular approach in summer is from Dürrboden at the back of the Dischma Valley: from the bus stop or the parking lot, follow the marked mountain trail via the Furggasee lake and the Fuorcla da Grialetsch to the hut; it takes around one and a half hours to walk the 540 meters in altitude.

Parking

For motorists, the most convenient starting point in summer is the Dürrboden mountain inn at the end of the Dischma Valley, where there is a large parking lot right at the start of the hiking trail to the hut. From the Engadin side, there are designated parking facilities along the Flüela Pass road and at the Susch, Chantsura and Susch, Schwarzhorn turn-off stops; local parking regulations, fees and possible seasonal closures should be checked before arrival.
