The Preber (2,740 m) is one of the most significant peaks of the Schladminger Tauern, the highest subrange of the Niedere Tauern. These mountains are part of the Central Alps and consist of crystalline rock. The hut, operated by the Graz section of the ÖAV, stands on the Sattelkogel, the southeastern spur of the ridge descending from the Preber, along which the Styrian-Salzburg state border runs. The hut is located right at the tree line and offers a sweeping panorama high above the mountaineering village of Krakau.
[Bn]In 1892, the Graz section of the ÖAV chose the southern slopes of the Niedere Tauern, including Krakau, as its area of activity. Shortly thereafter, the decision was made to build a mountain hut on the Styrian side of the Preber, which was officially opened on September 17, 1894. The small alpine lodge has remained virtually unchanged in appearance since then; it was only equipped with restrooms in the 1970s and with a photovoltaic system in 2014. In 2020, partition walls were installed in the dormitory.
