Lage
Die Hohe Veitsch, auch Veitsch oder Veitschalpe, ist ein Bergmassiv in den Mürzsteger Alpen in der Steiermark. Der aussichts- und blumenreiche Kalkstock erstreckt sich von West (Hauptgipfel, 1981 m ü. A.) nach Ost (Plateau auf etwa 1500 m) bis zur Klein-Veitsch-Alm über rund 5,5 km.
Geschichte
Eröffnet wurde die Hütte im September 1880, in der Folge mehrmals umgebaut und erweitert, zuletzt generalsaniert 2013. Namensgeber war Franz Graf von Meran (1839-1891), einziger Sohn von Erzherzog Johann und Anna Plochl, welche 1844 Gräfin von Meran wurde. Der Sohn Franz wurde 1839 in Wien geboren, am 30. 12. 1845 in den Grafenstand (von Meran) erhoben, widmete sich ab 1862 der Verwaltung des väterlichen Erbes und der Fortentwicklung der aus dem Joanneum hervorgegangenen Einrichtungen. Er und seine Nachkommen wurden mit Mitgliedern des österreichischen Hochadels verwandt.
Ausstattung
Zimmer, Lager, offener Winterraum mit einem Stockbett, keine Heiz- und Kochgelegenheit.
Weitwanderwege
Durch die Lage am Nordalpenweg, am Nord-Süd Weitwanderweg und am Mariazeller Weg ist die Berghütte ein wichtiger Stützpunkt für Weitwanderer und Pilger, die zur Magna Mater Austriae nach Mariazell unterwegs sind. Vom Südwesten führt der Teufelssteig zum Graf-Meran-Haus; dieser vereinigt die Weitwanderwege 01, 05 und den Steirischen Mariazellerweg; die Wege 01 und 05 verbinden die Veitsch mit dem Steirischen Seeberg. Der Teufelssteig ist auch von der Brunnalm erreichbar.
Plateauwanderung
Die landschaftlich eindrucksvolle Überschreitung des Plateaus vom Graf-Meran-Haus über die Hohe Veitsch, den Seeboden und die Seebodenhütte bis zur Grundbauernhütte auf der Kleinveitschalm erfordert etwa 2½ Stunden. In die Gegenrichtung ist wegen der Steigungen etwas mehr Zeit einzuplanen.
Zustiege
Ausgangspunkt ist der große Parkplatz beim Wirtshaus "Pflanzlhütte" auf der Brunnalm (1050 m) in Großveitsch. Von diesem aus vorbei an der Talstation des Liftes, die Lifttrasse danach zur Forststraße queren, dieser bergauf folgen bis zur Abzweigung. Nun links weiter vorbei am Alpengasthaus Scheikl bis zum Wegweiser Graf Meranhaus - Hohe Veitsch. Dann die Schipiste hinauf bis zur Bergstation des Sonnkogelliftes. Dem Wegweiser Graf Meranhaus Weg 465 folgen. Die Serpentinen führen direkt zum Graf Meranhaus. Vom Graf Meranhaus ist der Gipfel der Hohen Veitsch (1981 m) in ca. 30 min. erreichbar.
