The Blüemlisalphütte SAC is located at 2840 m above the Hohtürli between Kandersteg and Kiental. The mountain hut is an important base for high-altitude tours and long-distance hikers.
The Blüemlisalp SAC hut is situated at 2840 m just above the Hohtürli, the pass between Kandersteg and the Kiental, in the Bernese Oberland. The hut belongs to the SAC Blüemlisalp section and stands on the edge of the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Unesco World Heritage Site, with sweeping views over Lake Oeschinen, Lake Thun and the Blüemlisalp group. It is usually open from mid-June to mid-October; outside of this period, a simple winter room is open. The Blüemlisalphütte is a classic base for high-altitude tours on the Blüemlisalphorn, Morgenhorn and Wyssi Frau and is also a stage stop on the Via Alpina and the Bärentrek between Kandersteg and Griesalp. In the morning there is a rich breakfast buffet, during the day simple hot and cold dishes are served, including various rösti, cheese slices, soups and homemade cakes, in the evening a three-course menu; vegetarian options are possible by prior arrangement. The approach is either from Kandersteg via Oeschinensee and the Bärgli to Hohtürli or from Griesalp in Kiental via Bundalp; both options are long mountain hikes with well over 1000 meters of altitude. The hut is mainly used by mountaineers, ambitious hikers and long-distance hikers, but in stable summer weather it is also suitable as a destination for sure-footed families with older children. Due to the length of the approaches, the altitude and the glaciated surroundings, careful tour planning is important; current conditions, any closures and the weather forecast should always be checked before setting off. The origins of the hut date back to the 19th century, when the first simple shelter was built in 1875 in the Frauenbalm below the Hohtürli; after several extensions and new buildings, today's Blüemlisalphütte was built slightly above the pass in 1947 and later modernized several times.

Rooms

The Blüemlisalphütte offers 95 sleeping places in several dormitories, all equipped with comforters; the use of your own hut sleeping bag is obligatory for reasons of hygiene. Reservations are compulsory, as the hut is very busy in the summer season. Cancellation deadlines and conditions are based on the SAC general terms and conditions. On arrival, guests report to the lounge and dining room, where their sleeping area and procedures are explained to them. Slippers in various sizes are available in the entrance area, street shoes remain in the shoe room. Night-time is at 10 p.m., the lounge is then closed because many rope teams start very early. There is no drinking water or showers in the hut; only cold water is available for personal hygiene in the toilets. Overnight stays and consumptions are paid for before the night's rest; cash payment in CHF or euros is possible, as well as major debit and credit cards and Twint. Mobile phone reception, especially with Swisscom, is available for emergencies, WLAN is deliberately not offered. The winter room has 16 simple beds with woollen blankets, a wood-burning stove and cooking and eating utensils; water must be obtained from snow and users must leave the room clean and use wood sparingly.

Food and drink

In summer, the hut team serves its guests a rich breakfast buffet and a small menu with simple but hearty dishes such as Blüemlisalp rösti, cheese slices, soups and dried meat platters. Homemade cakes and coffee are popular in the afternoon, while in the evening a three-course menu is served, with vegetarian options also available if booked in advance, accompanied by homemade iced tea and regional Blüemlisalp beer.

Public transport

By public transport, take the train to Kandersteg and from there it is just a few minutes' walk to the valley station of the Oeschinensee gondola lift, from where the ascent begins. Alternatively, the Postbus runs from Reichenbach im Kandertal through the Kiental valley to the Griesalp stop, the starting point of the second main ascent; the return journey can easily be combined as a round trip via the other side of the valley.

Directions

From Kandersteg at around 1200 m, the marked mountain trail leads via Oeschinensee, Unteres and Oberes Bärgli to Hohtürli and a short distance further on to the hut; without the cable car, it takes around 5.5 hours to walk and well over 1500 meters in altitude. If you take the Oeschinensee cable car, you start above the lake and reach the hut in around 4 hours, with a considerable difference in altitude. From Griesalp in the Kiental valley at around 1400 m, the approach is via Untere and Obere Bundalp, the Warte and the steep final ascent to Hohtürli, which takes around 4.5 hours. Other alpine crossings connect the hut with the Gspaltenhorn and Rotstock huts, among others, and require appropriate experience.

Parking

For the approach from Kandersteg, parking spaces are available at the valley station of the Oeschinensee cable car as well as other public parking spaces in the village; the municipality points out that only certain places, for example in Eggenschwand at the end of the valley, are suitable for parking for several days. Those starting from Griesalp should use the signposted parking facilities in the area of the alps and inns; the hut itself can only be reached on foot.
