On foot across the Alps, stage 1: For those who want to complete all 15 stages: not for cable car, bus, or taxi passengers! This Alpine route is planned on foot, from Bregenz to Meran, through flat valleys, up to alpine peaks, over suspension bridges and through streams. Exposed, exposed or secured paths lead over scree fields, ridges, and via ferrata routes. We start at Lake Constance, at Bregenz train station (seaside stage). The town with its paved streets and paths lies before us (6 km approx. 1:30 hrs), before we head on ascending paths into the greenery, passing through a piece of forest and getting a small foretaste of the first alpine conditions with wonderful views and almost 1000 m altitude. Already the descent offers a view of Hinterfeld. There is the possibility to buy forgotten items, sunscreen, medicines, etc. Our first mountain, Brüggelek at over 1161 m, awaits to be conquered before leading us over winding paths to the Bregenzerach, shortly before Lingenau. Here is the first opportunity to stay overnight, for which tomorrow a longer route (6 km, 1:30 hrs) has to be accepted to Hittisau, our actual destination. The given times are pure walking times without breaks.

Over the Gebhardsberg to the green hills of the Bregenz ForestToday we leave Lake Constance and hike up the wooded Gebhardsberg, through which the Pfändertunnel makes its way. From Hohenbregenz Castle, we see what lies ahead in the coming days: the extensive Bregenz Forest in its green, albeit sparsely wooded, attire. Behind Kennelbach, we walk through shady mixed forest on the first modest ridge in the Bregenz Forest. On the flattened mountain ridge, which was shaped by glacier masses during the last Ice Age, large alpine and pasture areas dominate the landscape. The combinations of various shades of green and beautiful flower meadows are balm for the eyes and a break for the soul. From the Bereuter Three-Countries Viewpoint, the view wanders back over the Swabian Sea. The stage ends at the impressive lime tree in the village square of Alberschwende. An ice cream and cool feet in the village fountain – that is what we have earned after the accomplished stage!
