02 Bregenz – Alberschwende
Today we leave Lake Constance and hike up the wooded Gebhardsberg, through which the Pfändertunnel makes its way. From Hohenbregenz Castle, we see what lies ahead in the coming days: the extensive Bregenz Forest in its green, albeit sparsely wooded, attire. Behind Kennelbach, we walk through shady mixed forest on the first modest ridge in the Bregenz Forest. On the flattened mountain ridge, which was shaped by glacier masses during the last Ice Age, large alpine and pasture areas dominate the landscape. The combinations of various shades of green and beautiful flower meadows are balm for the eyes and a break for the soul. From the Bereuter Three-Countries Viewpoint, the view wanders back over the Swabian Sea. The stage ends at the impressive lime tree in the village square of Alberschwende. An ice cream and cool feet in the village fountain – that is what we have earned after the accomplished stage!
Starting from Bregenz train station, 400 m, we first follow the signs towards »Gebhardsberg« and the yellow-white marking. In the pedestrian zone, turn right into Kaiserstraße and continue straight through Kirchstraße to the baroque parish church of Saint Gallus, almost on the outskirts of Bregenz. At the church, turn right into Schloßbergstraße, which leads uphill past the Marienberg monastery garden and Villa Raczynski to the forest edge. At the »Racinsky Ruhe« junction, turn half-left and after 200 m cross Fluherstraße to the right. Now continue uphill through the magnificent mixed forest with stately trees and great biodiversity. A forest education trail, partly following the path to Gebhardsberg, tells more about this. There are several forks in the forest, usually leading also to Hohenbregenz Castle. At a nicely framed spring, you can refill your water supplies. Below the castle, we reach an access road where we briefly turn right to stroll to the viewing terrace of Hohenbregenz
