Hiking in Schattwald

A scenic hike from Jungholz to Schattwald in the Tannheimer Valley.

The Vilsalpsee mountains are a subgroup of the Allgäu Alps, located between the Tannheimer mountains in the northeast and the Daumen group in the southwest, not as high as the Hochallgäuer Alps on the Central main ridge, but no less attractive and quite challenging, as this tour impressively demonstrates.

The "Grenzgänger" is a multi-day route in the Allgäu Alps. The core feature is the constant crossing of the Austrian and German border between the Tannheimer Valley, Hintersteiner Valley, and Lech Valley. The circuit around the Hochvogel as well as the visit to the well-known Schrecksee are only two of the highlights. Several of the highest waterfalls in Germany (stage 5 and 6) await the hiker, as well as a gloomy north face (stage 2), a mountain that splits (stage 5), extensive flower meadows, and magnificent panoramas.

Finale for the border walker. We pass the Zipfelsfälle waterfalls, climb up to the Zipfelsalpe and the Iseler, before hiking along the magnificent ridge path over to the Kühgundkopf. From Wannenjoch and Wiedhag, it goes down to Schattwald.
