Hiking in Schäffern

This stage leads us to the highest point of the 07 route, the Hochwechsel. For the first and only time, we have to overcome over 1000 meters of elevation.

Over the Hochwechsel and the Stuhleck we hike towards the Fischbach Alps with the Teichalm and the fascinating Bärenschützklamm.

The 125-kilometer-long Austrian-Hungarian Alpannonia starts from the Alpine mountains and leads through the hilly region to the Pannonian Plain.

On the 7th stage, we first come into contact with alpine terrain on the Zentralalpenweg – via the spa and ski resort Mönichkirchen we begin the crossing of the Hochwechsel, staying overnight at the Hallerhaus.

The East Austrian Borderland Trail is one of the ten major long-distance hiking routes in Austria and leads from the northern Waldviertel to the southeastern Styria.

The route leads from Pinggau Markt station via Schäffern and Mönichkirchen to the Hallerhaus am Wechsel.

Stage 7 of the Wiener Alpenbogen (WAB) trail begins in the peaceful Gschaidt near Hochneukirchen. The trail often runs through dense forests and along scenic farm tracks to the high-altitude village of Mönichkirchen.
