The small river Inde, giving the indeland its name, rises in the High Fens-Eifel Nature Park near the German-Belgian border and flows into the Rur at Jülich-Kirchberg. In the course of the brown coal open-cast mining, the Inde was diverted for a length of 12 kilometers around the open-pit mine and today is a vivid example of a near-natural river landscape and a habitat for many plants and animals.
