The landscape on the way around Blausteinsee is diverse. The lake, which originated from an opencast mine pit, owes its name to a parcel of land north of Eschweiler, the parcel "Am blauen Stein". During the reprocessing and recultivation of the former opencast mining area, a total of approx. 75 million cubic metres of water were needed to fill the lake. It reached its current size in 2005 with a maximum depth of approx. 43.5 m. In 2000, the Blaustein-See recreational area was officially opened.
For some visitors who experienced this time of cautious development with the still artificially planted greenery, it almost seems unreal how the now dense green belt with diverse flora and fauna nestles the lake.
On the way, sunny field paths alternate with almost enchanted-looking forest trails. Impressive images of the recultivated opencast mining landscape, orchards and nature reserves are the highlights of this route. We also pass the Langendorf memorial, which commemorates the former village that had to give way as one of many villages due to its location in the mining area.

After the route, it is worth stopping at SEEHAUS53 directly at the lake center. Thanks to the large front completely glazed towards the lake, you experience a pleasant atmosphere here in every season: in summer, the Mediterranean flair with the large outdoor terrace attracts, in winter, the cosy modern lounge with a place by the fireplace. The opening hours of SEEHAUS53 can be found on the website www.seehaus53.de
