Three multi-day hikes lead through the most beautiful corners of the Upper Bavarian Pfaffenwinkel, whose culture has been shaped over centuries by numerous monasteries. The quiet hiking trails connect churches, monasteries, and places of power in nature.
The three pilgrimage routes start and end at the Hoher Peißenberg, which offers a panoramic view of the entire region and is predestined as an important pilgrimage site.
On the East Loop with the theme “reflecting waters”, 8 daily stages with a total length of 139 km lead to the significant monastery locations Polling, Bernried, and Benediktbeuern. The landscape of the route is shaped by Lake Starnberg and the Osterseen lakes as well as countless other lakes and ponds along the way, in which one can reflect themselves and their life.

On the Hungerbach Circular Trail to the Nature Adventure Playground The Hungerbach is named so because it heralded years of hunger. When it swelled, it was a sign of a wet year in which the grain in the fields spoiled. Rich grain farmers even came here from Lower Bavaria in the past to find out about its drainage. The Riegsee was also called Hungersee as it has no visible inflow or outflow. According to a legend, it is said to feed the Hungerbach. In any case, both are fed by the groundwater of the Murnau gravel deposits, which reacts quite strongly to precipitation fluctuations. The Hungerbach even seeps away between Unter- and Obereglfing and only reappears south of Huglfing.

Ach and Moraine Landscape Once there were six mills, sawmills, and oil presses on the Ach in Uffing. Due to the damming, the water level rose by two to three meters, and the flow velocity decreased. This created a moor south of Uffing, where rare plants and animals could spread from the Obernacher Moss.

In 1809, the Battle of Graf Arco between Bavaria and Tyrol took place near Spatzenhausen. The farmers of the Oberland defended their villages and their possessions against the enemy’s marauding troops. Those turbulent times are over, and today this area is a peaceful place. Attractions include the Bauerncafé in Tauting, the Freskenhof in Obereglfing, and the local history museum. ▶ In addition to the war memorial and bus stop 01, there is a parking lot near City Hall next to the “Spatzennest” kindergarten. From there, walk past the church and along Dorfstraße until Auweg branches off to the right.Follow this path north out of the beautiful village of Spatzenhausen and across open fields to boulder 02, just before the main road. Turn left there, cross under the road, and walk back a few meters until a signposted hiking trail branches off to the left and runs briefly along the edge of the forest. The trail then crosses a strip of forest and runs alongside the road to a dirt road 03. Turn right there and continue alongside the power line that supplies the Munich S-Bahn with electricity from the Walchensee power plant. At a signposted spot, you can take a detour of about 300 m to the left to the Rindengrotte 04. There, in a small chapel, you’ll find a Lourdes shrine made of bark. The Hungerbach Loop Trail continues north, crosses a narrow paved road, and runs along the edge of the forest to the end of a clearing. Then it enters the forest, but soon emerges again into open fields, where you head directly toward the church tower of Tauting. Before that, you’ll pass a beautiful wooden wayside cross 05. In Tauting 06, turn left onto Hardtstraße and, at the edge of town, you’ll reach the Bauerncafé, which invites you to take a pleasant break. Take Huglfinger Straße out of town and turn left at the farm next to the Tauting-West 07 bus stop. Now head east across open fields until you turn right just before Obereglfing. There, you’ll pass an interesting herb garden and educational garden 08, as well as a nature-themed playground, and then reach the main road, where you turn left. The trail leads through Obereglfing 09, past St. Martin’s Church, and branches off to the right immediately before City Hall, across from the village fountain. It takes you on a gentle descent past the children’s playground to a pond with a wetland biotope. If it has rained heavily, the following path is integrated into this wetland, and it’s best to take off your shoes and continue barefoot until you reach a road again in Untereglfing. From there, continue diagonally to the left and walk the length of the village. Turn left onto Bachstraße 10 and head down toward the Hungerbach. At the restored Hungerbach, turn right and follow the stream as it curves sharply to the left through the wide valley back to the starting point in Spatzenhausen 01.
