The earliest inhabitants of this site used the salt from the Salty Spring and jet, a semi-precious stone, from which they made jewelry. Much later, agriculture and livestock farming developed. During the unpopular gabelle, the spring's salt was at the center of very active smuggling.

Established in 1985, the Cathar Trail connects Port-la-Nouvelle (Aude) to Foix (Ariège) at the foot of the Pyrenees. This trail is one of the most iconic in the Pyrenees.

It is at the top of a small valley that the saltwater springs give rise to the Salz river. In the 17th century, a real salt smuggling operation was established with neighboring areas, and although in the 19th century industrial exploitation studies of the site were undertaken, they are no longer exploited nowadays.

The 1st stage (Port-la-Nouvelle > Durban) can be difficult as it is long and doesn't offer many shaded areas. It can be divided into 2 if you find accommodation in Roquefort.
Note that there are no grocery stores in Camps and Duilhac, so you need to plan ahead for food for lunch and dinner.
I have indicated water points, even those without the "potable" label, because they can be useful in extreme cases (it's better to drink slightly dirty water, possibly after filtering it yourself, than not drinking at all)
