Hiking in Azpeitia

The Camino Ignaciano is a pilgrimage route in northern Spain. It follows the path that Saint Ignatius of Loyola took from his birthplace Azpeitia to the Catalan town of Manresa. Our route takes us across the Basque Country in seven stages from the Santuario de Loyola to Navarrete just beyond the border with La Rioja.

The pilgrimage route follows the path that the later canonized Ignatius took in 1522 from his birthplace Loyola (Azpeitia) to Manresa.

The first stage of the Camino Ignaciano leads from Loyola to Zumárraga

Great tour from the coast to the heart of the Basque Country to the monastery of Loiola. Different (mostly easy) paths, long but not difficult. Some cafés, bars, and restaurants in Zestoa. Long but beautiful ascent after Zestoa. Here there is also a museum with prehistoric rock paintings. In Azpeitia, there is the Basque railway museum and the Abbey of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. (From here it goes on to Zumarraga and to the monastery of Arantzazu - each 1 day)

Ruta circular partiendo desde el Santuario de Loyola pasando por: - Kakuta 927m. (7.6 km) - Coll Zamaleku (8.5 km) - Borda Berastegi (8.8 km) - Erlo 1026m. / 1029m. (9.8 km) - Xoxote 912m. (11.4 km) - San Ignacio de Loyola (11.9 km) - Azketako elurzuloa (12.2 km) Desde el collado de Azketa sólo tenemos que descender hacia el E y posteriormente hacia el S para por un sendero fácil y a continuación pista para llegar hasta Azpeitia.
