Our almost six-kilometre hike through the "Valley of Sundials" is a tribute to the politician Dr. Jörg Mauthe. Quotes from his books - selected by well-known personalities from the worlds of art, culture and politics - accompany our route. At the magnificent fortified church of St. Stephanus with its valuable Gothic stained glass windows, we hike up the Hausberg to the Zehentfeld, a high meadow with a view of the Mollenburg; we follow the Hausbergstraße through meadows and forests and encounter the partially renovated Mollenburg, later cross the Hausbergbach stream and return to Weiten via a wonderful meadow path to the Prangerplatz and the "Dr. Jörg Mauthe Millennium Sundial". The hiking trail is uniformly signposted with yellow signs throughout.

Our approx. five km long planet hike starts at the Gewerbebaum in Weiten - in the valley of the sundials - with the sun, of course. On a scale of 1:1.6 billion, we hike through our solar system to its outermost planet Pluto in the hamlet of "Am Schuß". We will find true-to-scale illustrations of our planets on display boards. The hike leads partly over the beautiful hilly landscape of the Weitental valley. Benches along the way invite you to linger. The "Weitentalhof" inn in the hamlet of Am Schuß invites you to take a break. An accompanying brochure supplements the information on the planetary hiking trail boards and provides an insight into the wonderful world of astrology. The brochure is available in the inns and stores. The hiking trail is uniformly and consistently signposted with yellow signs.

From Gerwerbebaum, we first walk approx. six km through the market town of Weiten with its fortified church to St. Stephen. From there, our path leads past the pillory square with the Roland column, which once served as a place of jurisdiction. We get to know around 40 trees on the themed trail. We reach the tranquil hamlet of Eibetsberg via a steeper path that leads through a natural pine-hornbeam forest. Above it, the path leads past a lime kiln. Other highlights include two newly renovated wayside shrines (before Filsendorf and in Eibetsberg) and an imposing beech tree, which has been designated a natural monument for its 1000 years of age. After Eibetsberg, we hike back to Weiten. The hiking trail is uniformly signposted with yellow signs throughout.

This is the path up to Hochjauerling from Weiten without walking through a village, but only on forest trails, country roads, and forest roads! You will then enjoy a wonderful view from the Kaiser-Franz-Joseph observation tower. This way you can experience pure nature and recharge new life energy through this hike! "After an ascent, there is also a descent, otherwise the peaks would be strewn with frozen mountaineers." (Quote by Werner Schneyder)

Discovering an overlooked gem The hike through the Schwarzaugraben near Eitental proves that there are many things to discover in the very south of the Waldviertel, almost close to the Danube. It offers tranquillity, untouched nature and a spectacular cataract section and provides the finest impressions of the landscape. You will need alert senses and well-trained legs, as the nine-kilometre route from Eitental via Pöbring to Schwarzau must also be hiked back and there are no refreshment stops along the way.

Forecast for Weiten

10-day forecast
One of the most beautiful hiking tours in Weiten leads along the banks of the Danube. This path offers a magnificent view of the sparkling water and the surrounding green hills. It is a popular trail for nature lovers and families with children, as it is relatively flat and offers many places to rest.

Another highlight are the hikes through the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park. Here you can embark on challenging routes while admiring the impressive rock formations. The park covers an area of more than 170 square kilometres and thus offers enough space for extensive exploration tours.

For the adventurous, a hike to the summit of the Schneeberg, the highest mountain in Lower Austria, is also recommended. From there you have a spectacular view over the entire country all the way to the capital Vienna.

The best seasons for hiking in Weiten are spring and autumn, when the temperatures are pleasantly mild and nature has unfolded its full splendour. In summer, on the other hand, it can get very hot, so take enough water with you and use sunscreen.

There are many places in Weiten where you can go hiking. Besides the already mentioned Danube banks and the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park, there are also many other hiking trails and routes that you can explore. Some popular destinations are the Mariazell Pilgrimage Trail, which leads through picturesque villages, and the Wachau World Heritage Trail with its impressive vineyards.
