The Wertach is a spirited river. A great stretch with sweeping views, lush flower-filled meadows, and a suspension bridge.▶ From the information board in front of the tourist information office 01, turn left down the “Hauptstraße” to the Hornbach crossing, then head back uphill on the “Staig” road. Pass a chapel with a round dome dedicated to St. Lechitiel (the Holy Angel of the Mount of Olives). Pass the start of the Trilogy Ladder to Oy-Mittelberg (on the right) until, at the St. Ursula Chapel 02, the route branches off to the left from the country road. A stunning meadow landscape, fantastic views of the Alpine panorama, and a brilliantly placed Trilogie bench await hikers before the trail descends steeply toward the Wertach. Passing cascading waterfalls, the trail winds down into the valley, where a beautiful suspension bridge 03 gets your adrenaline pumping. Follow the meadow path through the valley, turning left and then taking a right-hand turn up to the hamlet of Kaltenbrunn. At the T-intersection, turn left onto the road until you reach the B42. There, follow the pedestrian and bike path to the left until, just before the hamlet of Häusern, a meadow path curves to the right in a beautiful arc and then turns sharply left just before Häusern. Please take the right-hand path! The route winds through meadows high above the banks of the Wertach, passes through pasture crossings, crosses pastures, and reaches the village of Barnstein. At the next intersection, keep left until you reach a major intersection ( 04). Go straight ahead here, taking the narrow and steep meadow trail uphill. Passing through pastures with sweeping views, the stage reaches the hamlet of Bergers with a few farmsteads. Keep left here and, at the next fork, continue straight ahead on the beautiful forest edge trail, hiking through the tree-lined path with magnificent views of the Alps and the Grünten. The trail now winds steeply downhill through the forest and reaches the valley floor within sight of the Wertach River. It continues along the banks of the Wertach on a rugged path. Devil’s claw, orchid, troll flower, mountain snowflake, and a diverse array of flora line the trail. Passing a rest area, the trail winds along the Wertach. At a ford, the trail makes a right turn and reaches the historic meadow “dr moaamad” 05; this hay meadow has never been fertilized and is a veritable plant paradise. The ridge trail makes use of footbridges and reaches the highlight of this adventurous stretch via the Edmund Happ Bridge. Then it’s time to say goodbye and head up a steep path to the terrace in front of the village of Wald. On a dirt road, the route heads toward the village, then, after crossing the Rudratsbachl (turn-off to Wald 06), turns left behind the Guardian Angel Chapel and continues to the “Birngschwender Weg.”Turn left here and, shortly afterward, right again onto a dirt road through a beautiful, winding high meadow valley lined with forest. Turn right at the edge of the forest, then right at the following T-intersection, and immediately left again uphill. The forest gives way to a varied meadow landscape, passing two barns and offering a view of the hamlet of Schwenden. In the village, there is a chapel, a former alpine dairy. It is said that not far from the chapel, Knight Schwendi also reached the site of a castle. Unfortunately, nothing remains to be seen. At the T-junction in the village, turn left first and then immediately right again to head out of town. The route leads over the 757-meter-high Härtenbichel and, at the summit, turns right downhill toward the Wertach and its meandering river. (Wertachtal 07 junction)The Wertach River now accompanies you again until, after several kilometers, a road branches off to the right, leading uphill from the riverbank toward the terrace ahead. Via a road, the route reaches “Schwendener Straße” and, on the left, the large Allgäu Brewery 08. At the intersection, turn first left and then right onto “Leuterschacher Straße” until you reach “Benefiziumstraße.” Turn left here toward St. John the Baptist Church 09, then right onto “Egerlandstraße,” which meets “Mühlobstraße,” which, in the direction of travel, passes under the railroad tracks, past the beautiful Trinity Chapel 10, and then turns left onto “Mühlbichl” Street to the Leuterschach train station 11, where this stage ends.
