The forest construction team has done an excellent job. Exemplary and exciting – we won't find another hiking trail like the one through the Wertach Gorge anywhere else. Nature lovers can intensely experience one of the last sections of wild river in Germany and dive into a captivating primeval world.
We start at the church in Wald, 800 m, taking the sidewalk towards the Wertach valley and shortly after turn onto Wertachweg, which then turns into a farm road. From a rest spot, a path descends through steep mixed forest into the Wertach Gorge, 765 m. First at an old river arm, later along the Wertach itself, sections of the Jakobus pilgrimage route with shelters and the water strider route (see Allgäu hiking trilogy) lead through a still pristine river landscape with refreshing gorge forest vegetation.Walkways make walking easier. Then the mountain slope presses in closely again, leaving barely enough room for the exemplary construction of the long Edmund Happ walkway. At the meadow after a flower-rich floodplain, called Mollamad, markings guide up a mountain spur through a water protection area.
