Visperterminen, which is called Täärbinu in Valais German, is a village and municipality in the district of Visp in the Swiss canton of Valais. Visperterminen is also called the Heida village, because the mountain village at the entrance to the Vispertal valley is not only known as a starting point for exciting hiking tours and well laid-out hiking trails, but also for its certified white wine made from the Savagnin blanc grape variety, which bears the name Heida. Visperterminen, 1378 metres above sea level, is home to the highest vineyards in Europe, and Heida is called the pearl of Alpine wines. This is perhaps all the more reason for you to come to Valais for alpine hikes in a magnificent mountain world.
The 10 most beautiful hikes in Visperterminen
An old mountain village with a unique tradition
The heath village of Visperterminen is documented as early as the 11th century under the name Termenum. The inhabitants here have always led a nomadic life from "ground to ridge", which was due to their rural work between the bottom of the valley to the high mountain pastures. That is why the landscape is marked by a multitude of paths and trails, which today are not infrequently hiking trails . You can hike along historical paths and voluntarily climb metres of altitude that the locals had to climb regularly. On the hikes in the alpine region you will pass many a hamlet, each of which has a chapel, a distillery and an old grape press called Driel.
Good physical condition is always required for mountain hiking
Good physical condition and sturdy shoes are always required when hiking in the mountains. At high altitudes you can expect snow on your hiking tours, even in summer. You will also encounter animals such as ibexes, chamois and marmots under favourable circumstances on your hikes. Of course, there are also hiking trails of easy and medium difficulty. Thanks to modern technology, you can take the chairlift from Visperterminen to Giw at over 2000 metres. From there, a beautiful forest trail leads you to Gspon, from where you can take the cable car down to Stalden. The post bus then takes you back to Visperterminen via Visp. Alternatively, you can hike from Giw along a high-altitude trail with views of the highest mountains in the Swiss Alps.
Varied hiking trails and the vineyard nature trail
The hikes along the vineyard trail are quite easy, even though there are a few metres of height to climb in the village with its typical rows of houses and in the steep vineyards. A tour through the vineyards can be combined with tastings of the delicious Heida. Such wine walks with tastings are sometimes offered on a guided basis. Of medium difficulty is the approximately three-hour circular hike on the Chapel Trail along the Suone Bodmeri, which passes ten historic rosary chapels and the pilgrimage site of the Visitation of Mary. The approximately five-hour hike from Visperterminen over the panoramic Bistinenpass mountain path to the Simplonpass, past the wonderfully clear Gibidumsee lake and through the wild and romantic Nanztal valley is quite a challenge.
Varied hiking tours in a unique mountain world
Visperterminen is an ideal point for varied mountain tours in a very unique mountain world that has more to offer than just mountains. The best thing to do is to always follow the signposts. Then you can hardly get lost here and always find your way back. One of the most beautiful hikes in the Valais is the one from Gspon via Lake Gibidum to Giw, from where the chairlift takes you back to Visperterminen. A hike on the Gibidum Pass along the forest border is also a unique experience.
