This quality trail, Hald Sø–Stanghede, is certified by the Danish Hiking Association. Along the route, you’ll experience the transition from East Jutland (beech forest) to West Jutland (heathland). You’ll pass through a stretch of unspoiled heathland (Stanghede) west of Hald Lake and walk along sunken roads that are remnants of the Hærvejen. You’ll reach the hills south of Lake Hald, which offer some beautiful views. You can walk the trail in either direction, but it’s recommended to walk it counterclockwise.

This quality trail is certified by the Danish Hiking Association. The trail winds through the area, which features natural forest, heathland, and plantations. Begin your hike just behind Niels Bugges Kro, where the oak trees—some up to 300 years old—are gnarled and resemble something out of a fairy tale. This has given the area its name, Troldeslugten, where springs supply water to the pond at Niels Bugges Kro. The trail continues to Stanghede, the large heathland area with heather and juniper bushes. Here, animals graze to keep tree growth and grass in check—as they compete with the heather. The relatively hilly landscape is punctuated by two ancient burial mounds—Kvindhøje—which offer a fine view. There was once a weather station located north of the two mounds. A stone marker commemorates this. The tour’s last two attractions are both connected to Hald Hovedgård: Humlehuset has always belonged to Hald Hovedgård and takes its name from the hops that were cultivated there, which were used to brew beer. Today, the building is used by the Hald Sø Boat Club. When the government acquired Hald Hovedgård from a private owner in 1948, there was an orchard on the land between Humlehuset and Niels Bugges Kro. Now there is a deciduous forest here.

For the most part, the Quality Trail runs along paths that are paved with asphalt or compacted gravel. Along the way, you’ll pass through beautiful ravines leading down toward Nørresø, and there are several lovely views of the city of Viborg. Part of the area you pass through was owned by the Købke family—hence the trail’s name. You’ll also pass the old Rønneallé leading to the now-demolished Houlkærgård.
