In the Sign of the WaterfallLovers of roaring waterfalls will certainly get their money’s worth today. With the Ruisseau de Fouillet and the Ruisseau d’Ars, two rushing streams accompany us today, presenting several waterfalls on their steep path down into the valley. However, to see the full number of natural wonders, we must accept some elevation and distance. Fortunately, there is also the option to significantly shorten the stage by taking the direct descent from the Jasse de Fouillet to Aulus-les-Bains. Since the main path past the Cascade d’Ars can be quite long, this variant is definitely worth considering. The waterfall can still be visited the next day during a “rest day” if energy is running low.

Landmark of Ariège: through the Parc Naturel du Mont ValierThe current stage unusually runs a bit more often over wider forest roads and small streets. However, because we are repeatedly on narrow paths and trails in between and rewarded with magnificent views, the positive side ultimately prevails. Besides the waterfalls, the view of the rocky ring decorated with numerous peaks remains especially memorable. The Mont Valier, the landmark of Ariège, clearly stands out with its 2838 m. On the descent from Bouche d’Aula, several small clusters of houses add some variety to an otherwise monotonous route. After the small, sleepy village of Couflens, we finally aren’t far away. One last ascent, and we reach the Gîte d’étape de Rouze. Managed jointly by a German and a Dutch person, the accommodation and farm fully focus on local and organic products. Homemade goat cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables from their own cultivation – who wouldn’t salivate?
