Shortcut via the »Tour du Val du Garbet«This alternative route bypasses the two stages from Gîte d’étape d’Aunac to Saint-Lizier d’Ustou and connects directly to the next stage here. Especially hikers who depend on accommodations should consider this, as the stage »Gîte d’étape d’Aunac – Gîte d’étape de Rouze« is likely too long for most. The route called »Tour du Val du Garbet« runs for a long time above the Ustou valley and then descends to Saint-Lizier d’Ustou – a stage pleasant in length and elevation difference.

GR 10D – Direct route to the Estours ValleyThose who do not need the accommodation and shopping options of the Gîtes d’etape d’Esbintz and d’Aunac as well as in Seix have the option of a direct variant with the GR 10D. From the Col de la Core, 1395 m, the very scenic alternative route leads through the forest and over alpine terrain with numerous shepherd huts down into the Estours Valley. Here we meet the main route again towards Cabane d’Aula and Rouze.

Lowland variant from Bonac to Col de la CoreFollowing the two-day alternative route via the GR 10E, we can look forward to bubbling streams, charming villages, and pleasant forest trails. Quite atypical for the GR 10, here we often encounter flat sections, which sometimes run along roads. At the Col de la Core, 1395 m, the GR 10E finally meets the main route again, which we follow to the Gîte d’étape d’Aunac. Alternatively, from the Col de la Core, you can descend directly to the Piste d’Estours and connect there.

Over the Col de la Core, the hub of the GR 10Today, patience is what’s needed most. Contrary to what the name “Maison du Valier” might suggest, today’s stage does not yet treat us to any breathtaking views of the famous Mont Valier (2,838 m). Instead, however, we’re treated to fantastic high-altitude crossings from col to col, with each pass offering a new perspective on the diverse landscape of the Pyrenees. After conquering the grueling climb to the Cap des Lauses (1,892 m) alongside rushing streams, our efforts are certainly rewarded. At the Col de la Core (1,395 m), popular with motorcyclists and day hikers alike, there’s a lively atmosphere. Nevertheless, it’s advisable to take a moment to relax here and, while resting on one of the picnic benches, get an overview of the various routes of the GR 10. On the one hand, the GR 10E, coming from Bonac, rejoins the main route here. At the same time, we can also opt for the direct alternative (GR 10D) into the Estours Valley and on to Rouze. That is, provided we don’t need lodging at one of the two gîtes d’étape at the end of this stage or in the nearby village of Seix. In this way, the GR 10 meets the needs of all hikers. That’s truly something to see!

Landmark of Ariège: through the Parc Naturel du Mont ValierThe current stage unusually runs a bit more often over wider forest roads and small streets. However, because we are repeatedly on narrow paths and trails in between and rewarded with magnificent views, the positive side ultimately prevails. Besides the waterfalls, the view of the rocky ring decorated with numerous peaks remains especially memorable. The Mont Valier, the landmark of Ariège, clearly stands out with its 2838 m. On the descent from Bouche d’Aula, several small clusters of houses add some variety to an otherwise monotonous route. After the small, sleepy village of Couflens, we finally aren’t far away. One last ascent, and we reach the Gîte d’étape de Rouze. Managed jointly by a German and a Dutch person, the accommodation and farm fully focus on local and organic products. Homemade goat cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables from their own cultivation – who wouldn’t salivate?
