Hike from Griante to Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo with a visit and a subsequent break at Enoteca Cantina Follìe (times not included). Return via Rogaro past Ristorante Fagurida. A nice little route in unsettled weather conditions. Part of the path paved with pebbles becomes quite slippery when wet but can also be bypassed on small side streets. A detour to Torre Merivale offers a beautiful view of the lake.

Long-distance hikes above the Lario The "Monti Lariani" are not peaks on Lake Como, but rather the mountain huts that once played an important role in the nomadic life of farmers, long before the Milanesi, in need of relaxation, converted them into weekend cottages. In the past, peasant life moved throughout the year between the valley (paese), the mountain pastures (monti) and the high alpine pastures, an arduous nomadic existence within a farming area that stretched from the lakeshore to above the forest line. There were no roads at that time, but there were paths, artfully laid out and branching out in many places. The "Via dei Monti Lariani" follows them for around 120 km, from Cernobbio at the south-western end of the lake up to Sorico, marked continuously (but not always reliably!) in red-white-red: five to seven daily stages, 4.15 to a maximum of 8.30 hours long. You can work up quite a sweat as you constantly ascend and descend along the western bank of the Lario, even if the "Via" does not touch any peaks. In total, around 5000 meters of ascent and descent are covered. The effort is sweetened by fascinating views, insights into the life of the ancients, the incomparable architecture of the Monti and lots of colorful flowers to the left and right of the path. Of course, you can also do the tour in the opposite direction, from north to south. Partial ascents are also possible, as many paths lead down to the lakeshore. Overnight stays are in mountain huts and small hotels. It is best to take a cab for the ascent to Monte Bisbino. This shortens the first day's stage considerably, which is also advantageous in terms of the journey to Lake Como. The walking time from Cernobbio is 7 hours.

Cultural Walk at the TremezzinaAzalea Riviera: It sounds a bit pretentious, but it has its justification, because in spring you can literally smell the azalea and rhododendron bloom at the Tremezzina. In summer, during the main travel season, it often smells less refined between Sala Comacina and Cadenabbia, as the narrow State Road No. 340, which squeezes through the villages, becomes a veritable bottleneck, hopelessly overloaded. But you can't really get to know the Tremezzina from the road: the incomparable ambiance, shaped by the aristocratic architecture of the last century, the lush Mediterranean park flora, the atmospheric landscape setting. The most famous estate on the lake is Villa Carlotta, a must-visit for anyone interested in culture, a building with a baroque core that was remodeled in a neoclassical style after 1801 and at that time received its precious interior. The most beautiful jewel, however, is the generously laid-out park. The route from Lenno through the villages to Cadenabbia is both a landscape experience and a cultural pleasure; the view stretches over the lake to the Bellagio peninsula and the Grigne mountains. On the way back, you have the Azalea Riviera in front of you, dominated by the massive wide mountain massif of Monte di Tremezzo, 1700 m.

Small Mountain – Big Pictures Actually – as a look at the map suggests – the Dossone is just an anteroom or base rock of the Crocione, 1641 m, which, true to its name, stretches its huge cross one and a half kilometers above the lake into the sky. But anyone who takes the path from Griante to the pilgrimage chapel San Martino and further up to the flattened hill (Dossone) will be enlightened: There is hardly a more beautiful path in the Tremezzina. Lake and mountain backdrop combine into real picture-book motifs, the white chapel under mighty rock walls provides the picturesque foreground. Also fascinating is the view of the long stretched tongue of land of Bellagio. And beyond the lake stand the limestone walls of the Grigne, with the mountains of the Valle Varrone made of darker eruptive rock behind on the left, already photogenically dusted in late autumn.

The picturesque village of Tremezzo lies 60 kilometres north of Milan on the shores of Lake Como and belongs to the municipality of Tremezzina. The charming village is known for its beauty - which also led to famous film scenes being shot there. For example, some scenes from the Star Wars series were shot there. The idyllic nature around the place makes it perfect for walks ranging from easy to challenging.

Other popular activities in Tremezzo are cycling or water sports activities such as sailing, swimming or surfing. In summer, when the plants and gardens of the area are in full bloom, it is a special pleasure to explore Tremezzo. The many villas with their impressively planted gardens complete the picture of the town. Another popular destination is Villa Carlotta, which is known for its extensive collection of works of art and sculptures.

Hiking trails such as the Green Trail lead you directly along the lake and show you all the beauty of the area along the way. The crystal-clear water, the Mediterranean flora and fauna and historic villages accompany you on the approximately ten-kilometre hike from Colonno to Griante. Of course, you can also start in Tremezzo and walk the other way round. While the air is filled with the scent of the olive groves, you have the opportunity to enjoy your surroundings to the full on this easy hike. After about three and a half hours, you will reach your destination, where you can stop at one of the ristorantes and relax with a well-deserved glass of wine after your walk.

Hiking trails in the mountains behind Tremezzina

If you are looking for more challenging hikes, turn to the mountains behind Lake Como. There you will find trails for advanced hikers as well as for mountaineers. One of the more demanding hikes takes on two spectacular peaks: you will climb both Monte Crocione and Monte di Tremezzo and enjoy wonderful views over Lake Como and its landscape.

Let's start in Lenno and from there directly into the Vares Prealps. First follow the Strada dell'Alpe to Narro and then turn towards the forest. Go up through the forest until you reach the eastern ridge of Monte Crocione. This is followed by an even steeper climb to the top of the mountain. From there you have a spectacular view. Now continue along the ridge to the second peak of your hike, Monte di Tremezzo. You complete the circuit by descending via the Alpe Mezzegra and a path back to Narro.

Auto am nördlichen Ortsausgang von Griante - etwas hoch im Wald - geparkt. Dann mit dem Bus C10 für 1,80€/P nach Colonno gefahren. Dort in den „Green way Lago di Como Panoramico“ eingestiegen. Sehr schön immer oberhalb des Sees nach Norden Richtung Griante zurückgewandert - 11km ganz locker in 6h mit vielen Pausen. Einige anstrengende Steigungen. Aber lohnenswerte Ausblicke! Schöne Eindrücke des dörflichen Lebens am Comer See! Toll!

Absolute Empfehlung!

Great hike! Spectacular views of Lake Como. Medium is the right rating, the hike is not easy as the rise in elevation some places requires an OK physical condition. However, there is no climbing, crossing of water (we did the hike in the summer) or similar. The hike starts at a small picknickarea with a couple of tables and some parkingplaces. Our GPS said the hike was around 8 km. It was very useful to have the app at some points. If not we would have had difficulties going in the right direction a couple of places. Only part we didn’t find was the last 5-10 mins. There should be a trail crossing a field going to the start spot, but we took the last 5 mins on the road. No problem though. All in all a great hike to be recommended.
