Popular as a vacation island for a long time, hiking in Sicily is still a little less known. But this is only to the advantage of all who like to hike through wild landscapes and discover new things. The ubiquitous Mount Etna beckons with an extraordinary exploration, Monte Cófano offers a great panorama over the azure sea and in the cities of Palermo, Cefalù and Messina pulsates with culture, born from the rich history of the island.

Forecast for Sicily

10-day forecast

Hiking is nothing new in Sicily, but it has not yet become a tradition. In the meantime, the network of paths has been expanded somewhat, but every now and then your sense of direction will be put to the test. There are not always clear signs, often the paths are unmarked. In Sicily, hikers need the courage for adventure, because that's exactly what it is: lush and wild nature, which in the end offers a fantastic view from the top of one of the mountains. It's worth not throwing in the towel too quickly and, with a little practice, get on the right track.

Volcano country - hiking on Mount Etna

No matter where you are on the island, the largest volcano in Europe is omnipresent. The 3329 m high Etna overshadows the whole island, even at the other end it can always be seen on the horizon. Even Goethe was on the active volcano in 1787 and explored the black earth around the crater during his trip through Italy. Meanwhile, Etna is very accessible, with cable cars, all-terrain buses and well-maintained trails you can get far up. It is recommended to hike with guides, they know the area best and will guide you safely through the terrain. The tour is for experienced hikers and requires some basic hiking knowledge. Bring plenty of water and warm clothing on your trip, as it can be chilly at high elevations - even on an active volcano!

The secondary craters of the volcano also offer great excursion opportunities. When visibility is good, the lava deserts on the northern flank are worth a visit. In the Parco dell'Etna you will pass through different vegetation zones on your hike, all of which benefit from the volcano. In the lower area, the Mediterranean maquis blooms and further up, cooled lava flows and craters form a picture as if from another world.

An island full of cultures

Messina, Sicily

A mixture of different cultures makes Sicily an extraordinary place, bursting with culture. Especially the Greeks shaped the island, which can be seen in Syracuse and the numerous temple ruins. On your walks you will always find the influences of earlier inhabitants. From 827 on, the Arabian army also left its mark on the vegetation. Date palms, sugar cane, rice and lemon trees are now everywhere on the island.

Palermo blossomed throughout history and today is a tourist magnet with its impressive scenery. Further east is the coastal town of Cefalù at the foot of the Rocca di Cefalù on which a leisurely hiking tour leads.

As a starting point for hiking tours is also suitable Taormina on the east coast of Sicily in the region of Messina, for example, around Mount Veneretta.

Other areas ideal for hiking:

  • Zingaro Nature Reserve in the northwest of Sicily
  • Lipari Islands especially Stromboli with the volcano of the same name
  • Hikes around Noto with visits to the late Baroque towns of Val di Noto

A nice and easy hike that is suitable for the whole family. The trail can be enjoyed on foot, but it's also well suited for mountain biking. Along the way, there are several scenic viewpoints with beautiful views of the coastline, making the route very enjoyable. The only downside is the summit, which has quite a few buildings and telecommunications antennas, taking away some of the natural charm of the place. It's also worth noting that the mountain is named in memory of the victims of the 1974 plane crash, giving the site a meaningful historical and commemorative significance.

Very pleasant walk starting through scrub woodland of Mount Etna broom then up through beech forest. In late late April everywhere was full of wild flowers with many orchids etc. As described the walk is mostly in a well graded track but once you reach the beech forest it is a walking path that goes direct uphill, steeply in places. The path ends on the pista altmontana track a short distance from the refugio. One thing to be aware of is that the distance cited is one way (as evident in the route profile). We walked it there and back, with small detour to take in the Grotto di Schandish, and it totalled just under 8 km.

In Castelbuono Richtung Refugio Crispi fahren. Dort parken. Das Refugio Crispi war Mitte April noch geschlossen. Keine Einkehrmöglichkeiten.

Very nice mix of nature culture and a bit of adventure. The thousands of graves are impressive, the flowers along the way are beautiful and crossing the river is a lot of fun. We were just a bit surprised how deep the water was (approx. 70 cm) at the last crossing before the climb to the starting point.
