The white cape at the end of the chalk cliffs of Eraclea MinoaOn the way around the »white cape«, our gaze first falls from above on the snow-white gypsum cliffs, which we can later admire down by the sea in contrast to the blue sky. High above the white cliffs, we pass the ruins of the ancient city of Eraclea Minoa founded by Selinunt, whose excavation site can be visited. From the mouth of the green-framed Platàni river, at the foot of the vertically rising marl walls, we hike along the sea back through yellow sand. Everywhere the fine sandy beach invites you to swim.

Inspired by the Magna Via  Francigena, we travel in five stages from Palermo to Agrigento. The third stage takes us from Francesca's B&B in Bivona to San Giovanni Gemini. Those who follow the tour as planned can reach Monte Cammarata after a more challenging gravel passage.  Spoiler: On the horizon rises the Queen of Sicily: Mama Etna. Those who want to take it a bit slower today can easily shorten this stage by staying on the strada provinciale. This stage is planned as a hike for technical reasons, but is intended for gravel bikes or MTB.

Capo Bianco – Torre Salsa – To the white cliffs on the African Sea

Hike along the beach or on forest trails and roads through an unspoiled stretch of coastline on the Mar d’Africa between the two white gypsum cliffs, Capo Bianco and Capo Torre Salsa.▶ From the beach bar/restaurant Lido Garibaldi 01, first take a detour along the beach heading west to Capo Bianco 02. After returning, continue walking along the beach—preferably barefoot—or along the parallel forest edge, now heading east. After 40 minutes, you’ll reach a side street 03 with several bars and restaurants. After that, the landscape changes somewhat—a belt of dunes stretches between the forest and the beach. The Torre Salsa Nature Reserve is a particularly important habitat for sea turtles: From mid-June through August, they lay their eggs in the sand; two months later, the hatchlings emerge. You’ll eventually reach a headland; to the left above it lies the ruined tower, and ahead is the large white cape of Torre Salsa. At dune opening 04, turn left; after a few meters, cross the wide road in front of a small square with trash cans and walk up the dirt path toward Torre Salsa 05, which you’ll reach after two hairpin turns. At the tower, turn left onto the paved road; with a magnificent view of Capo Bianco, walk along the terrace and then slowly downhill. At a left-hand curve, continue straight ahead down the gravel path to the wooded coastal strip, where you’ll rejoin the paved road. Continue straight ahead to a fork in the beach path; walk another 300 m along the small road, slightly uphill, and turn left at the next fork 06. Soon a trail begins that runs along the foot of the eroding slope; sturdy footwear is required here, as further erosion could make this section difficult to navigate. At the end, the path meets a dirt road; follow it to the left. Stay on this path—it runs along the edge of the forest, past several rugged rock cliffs with distinct folds. Several paths branch off toward the beach; on the forest path, you’ll pass a new vacation home complex, side road 03 from Hotel Luna Minoica to the beach, a cross path, and finally reach the spur road at the end, where you turn left back toward the nearby traditional restaurant—where you can also enjoy a good meal—at Lido Garibaldi 01.
