The most frequented stage of the long-distance trail is a pleasant introduction with some refreshment options and wonderful views of the vast Valbona valley.
This beautiful valley hike leads through a charming river landscape to two waterfalls with quite different characters, both of which are very impressive.
This hike differs from the others in the Albanian Alps - the character of the mountain range is already shaped by the geology of the Montenegrin mountains.
The plateau of Fusha e Denelit is an ideal warm-up route from Thethi. From the alpine pasture, a detour to the pass with a view into the Valbones Valley is also recommended.
Thethi’s Attractions
Theth is one of the best-known villages of Northern Albania, because of its stunning location and traditional houses that are surrounded by impressive vertical limestone peaks such as the Radohima and Arapi.
The last stage of the long-distance hiking trail "Peaks of the Balkans" offers us one more highlight: On both sides, the steep walls of the karst mountains rise 1,000 meters high. We walk through a high valley of austere beauty and reach the Peja Pass. The descent to Theth is longer than we think; the village welcomes us with the comforts of civilization.
From Mreg, a panoramic high-altitude hike leads up the valley to the beautiful Alp Jeshnicë and on to the Metohisë pass. Alp Greben can be reached comfortably through meadows and forest or via a more strenuous but very panoramic high-level hike. From here, a steep descent takes us to the next stage destination in Vermosh.

Great stage! The Komovi Mountains are really impressive, the hike to the beautiful summit of the Kom Kucki is a bit challenging, but doable. For the descent to Vermosh, I found a more logical approach than the original route - it follows a cow path between the ruins of Katun Orahovska and the ruins of Katun Redzica, instead of going around. You can download a gpx-track with extra explanation in some waypoints @ https://drive.google.com/file/d/1q-18OBlTrwnKOiU3pqP_cd3zW_qZKFfk. I also made a detailed description of the descent - download it @ https://drive.google.com/file/d/18U6wM5thb73lTcji2BVRHLFtKcpr7gp4.
I can say the warnings given on the official gps route are valid! The ascent going south bound is hairy enough but doable if you are comfortable with climbing and scrambling at height. Wouldn’t do it in bad weather or alone. The descent southbound gives every impression of a death trap. We turned around after 1 hour to go back to the top and take man longer route to thethe back towards the lakes. Making it a very long day! I’d suggest the via Dinarica team need to change the route of the descent going southbound
We did the hike on the beginning of June 2025 from Albania to Montenegro.
The hike is easy to find until the border, we followed a track. After we tried to follow the advice of Jean-Marc from the previous comment with GPS, there was no way anymore. It was quite hard because it was quite steep and with brushes, but ok. We found the path back at Katun Dediča. Then it was a really beautiful hike and easy. The last go down to Stanva is a little bit long and physical (going up and down above the forest) but not major difficulties.
This hike was beautiful. We did it at the end of may 2025 from Theth to Nikč.
The climb was hard because it was steep but not technical. We had snow on the top, but on flat parts so it was not a problem. Then for the going down to Theth it was ok until the split of the way around 1350m. We tried to follow the path on the right (which joins the road Nikč to Lepushe) but after 15 minutes, we lost the trail (around 1250m). So we came back and we took the other path on the left (which is well market at the split) but shortly after 10 minutes, there is no trail anymore. You have to follow a direction with your GPS during 1h/1h30 and walk in the brush and over dead trees.
Stage done in mid-August 2024: The trail between Theth and Valbona is very popular and there were plenty of opportunities to buy cold drinks along the way. I refilled my water at the spring near the Simoni Café. In general, the path was straightforward. The only challenge was the heat.
Stage done in mid-August 2024: I came from Plav and not from Vermosh because in Plav, I picked up my permit to cross the border. In Vusanje is a public water tap when walking to the end of the first road to the left after entering the village. I did not follow the path to the left towards Zastan Karaula and Jezerca because I did not want to climb the summit alone. As alternative, I continued my way straight towards Ropojanska Jezero reaching the VD again at Qafa e Pejës (markings are no longer for VD but for the Peaks of the Balkan trail). The views on the alternative routes were nice. All the water sources were dry due to the extremely hot weather, which also made hiking in the afternoon hours very challenging.
