In the secluded ÖxltalThe Kaunzalm below the Kellerjoch can be reached either by a rapid descent from the Spieljochbahn or relatively monotonously through the Öxltal. The mountain hiker seeking variety might want to include the Larchkopf and, if possible, complete a circular tour. This proved to be somewhat complicated during the exploration, as signage and markings leave much to be desired and forest roads can abruptly end. However, perhaps this little pathfinder exercise adds a bit of excitement to the quiet forest and alpine hike.

"This is definitely the way to the waterfall." That’s what it says on a sign in Schlitters, once a miners’ village. Nevertheless, the short trail leading there is one of the valley’s absolute hidden gems; you’ll search in vain for it in most brochures. That’s a shame, because this natural wonder is a hiking destination well worth seeing. You can combine a visit there with a loop hike over the neighboring Fügenberg. There you’ll find not only old farms and down-to-earth places to stop for a bite to eat, but also frequent great views of the valley and the towering mountains to the south. It’s worth looking up even before you start: Schlitters’ 66-meter-high church tower is the tallest in the entire Zillertal.> If you start at Schlitters 01 train station, walk under the bypass road to Dorfstraße. Turn right onto this street, cross the bridge over the Öxlbach, and turn left uphill before reaching the Jäger Inn. After the sign for “Wasserfall, Schlitterberg,” follow the path alongside the stream to the top house, which you’ll go around on the left. A footbridge leads you to two water intakes; from there, the Wasserfallweg trail leads to the right into the forest. From the parking lot at the Kultur-Zentrum, however, follow the path that goes past the back of the building and then uphill along the upper edge of the village (signs for “Fügenberg, Wasserfall”). Next to a large meadow, you’ll reach the two water reservoirs; from there, follow the “Wasserfall” sign along a path that’s wide at first and leads into the forest ravine. Follow a narrow trail past a torrent control wall, cross a footbridge on the right, and climb briefly up a steep slope into the rock basin with the Schlitterer Waterfall 02 (700 m). 0:30 h Back to the water reservoirs. From there, a narrow trail marked “Schoner, Baumannwies, Brandegg, Fügenberg” leads right up into the forest. It winds its way up steep and partly rocky slopes until you reach the Baumanner Farm at 800 m above sea level. There, turn sharply right onto the road toward “Baumannwies,” which winds its way up through hairpin turns across a scenic meadow and through forested slopes. Where a meadow glimmers through the trees, turn left onto a narrower path that passes under the high-voltage power line. Follow the edge of the meadow up to the Baumannwiesköpfl 03 inn (1,090 m). Beautiful view all the way to the Inn Valley! 1:30 h Descend to the left on the paved road toward “Fügen.” After a few steps, take a 10-minute detour to the left to the wooden chapel at Baumannwiesköpfl and the nearby cross at a lookout point.Continue on the paved road to a nearby fork; turn left there and always follow the signs for “Fügen” down to the Panorama-Pension Brandegg. There, turn sharply right toward “Fügen, Schoner” and hike downhill on a wide meadow path. In the Äußerer Söllbach ravine, cross the wooden footbridge to the right, head downhill to the left along the edge of the meadow, and then turn right toward several farms below a chapel. This is where the paved Konrad-Egger-Weg begins; follow it to the left to reach the Gasthäusl zum Schoner 04 (690 m). Shortly afterward, at a crossroads, turn left (signposted “Schlitters”) onto Fügenbergstraße. Pass a few farms and then continue straight ahead on Fasserweg through a residential area. After a short stretch through the woods, you’ll reach the Schmalzerhof. Just before it, turn right, walk directly around an old farmhouse, and pass through a small wooden gate behind it (sign “Fügen/Schlitters”). Now a narrow, often slippery path leads down into the forest between fences. Continuing your descent—past the Moosbeerbründl—you’ll reach a paved road at the valley floor. Take this road to the left back to starting point 01.
