Attention: The Steineck parking lot has been relocated 200 m elevation and 2.5 km downward. Additional effort about 1 1/4 hours compared to descriptions and diagrams. See below the photos! Due to "wild" parking and frequent narrowing of the public road for tractors, trucks, fire brigade, etc., a parking ban was unfortunately issued on both sides and is enforced!

Hike to the Hochsalm

One of the most popular summit destinations around Scharnstein is the 1405m high Hochsalm. The hike to this beautiful panoramic mountain offers many variations and possible combinations. It is also possible to make a detour to the famous Scharnstein castle ruins, which have an eventful history behind them. The trail to Hochsalm continues directly uphill, initially along the Thie&szligbach stream.

A second, shorter variant starts at a small car park on the hamberg path. This is already at an altitude of 750m and so the ascent is significantly shorter. The area around the Hochsalm offers numerous other variants to less-visited peaks and vantage points, all of which offer a magnificent view of the foothills of the Alps in Upper Austria and the Almtal valley.

Hikes around Steineck and Trapez

The Steineck, the highest mountain around Scharnstein, is a magnificent panoramic mountain. The hike begins leisurely along a forest road, but then becomes a little more challenging as it heads towards the summit on beautiful hiking trails. From the summit there is a magnificent view of the Traunstein, the Katzenstein and the Tote Gebirge. The hike is usually made from the Scharnstein side or from St. Konrad. Please note that parking is not easy, so ideally you should arrive by bus. However, the hike can also be tackled as a traverse from Grünau if you are fit enough.

Cross-country hikes and multi-day tours

The nice thing about hiking is that the start and finish do not necessarily have to be in the same place. With the help of a bus ride, you can make beautiful long-distance hikes. A nice route from Scharnstein is the hike to Gmunden, which runs along the last stage of the Salzkammergut BergeSeen Trail. On this beautiful route you hike past the Steineck, the Laudachsee and then reach Gmunden on the Traunsee. If you are then in the mood for more, take a look at the remaining stages of the trail.
