Through the charming countryside surrounding the ferry terminal atMany visitors to Rügen know Schaprode only for its large parking lots, where they leave their cars to take the ferry to Hiddensee for a day trip. You can also take a scenic loop trail along the Bodden shore. Particularly charming is the path running along a flood protection dike through the Udarser Wiek Nature Reserve, whose siltation zone is part of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. The Schaprode region made headlines in 2018 when, on the Kirchacker parcel of land, a schoolboy equipped with a metal detector discovered a silver hoard dating back to the time of the Danish Viking King Harald Bluetooth (c. 936–987).

The tour takes us along secluded dike paths through the unspoiled natural landscape along the shores of the Udarser Wiek. From a bird-watching hut, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Bodden, which serves as a refuge for numerous waterbirds. Especially during the fall migration, cranes and gray geese can also be spotted in the adjacent fields.> The hike begins at Schaproder Hafen 01 —where the ferries to the nearby island of Hiddensee also depart—and from here follows the narrow road toward “Streu.” At the town exit sign, we continue straight ahead (“Udarser Wiek/Beobachtungskanzel”). In Streu 02, the route then follows the main road, which turns right at the last houses of the hamlet, as indicated by a sign. On a paved path, the tour passes a horse farm and reaches the waters of the Udarser Wiek, an 8 km² lagoon-like bay. Here, it continues to the left along an oak-lined avenue. We now always take the path close to the shore and therefore soon veer away from the edge of the field. Following the reed line and passing a shelter, we reach a beautifully situated birdwatching hut 03 on the Udarser Wiek. In addition to numerous species of ducks and geese, many birds of prey can also be spotted: white-tailed eagles, red kites, and buzzards are present year-round. During the spring and fall migration seasons, numerous cranes can also be observed here, especially at dusk. After a rest at this idyllic spot, the route continues along the dike path, passing another rest area and the white building of a water management facility. The tour then enters a pristine wooded area. Note: 200 m past this deciduous forest, our dike path veers to the right. After this right turn, we leave the dike at a pumping station 04 and a pond. Following the track along the small body of water through the meadows, we head toward Trent, which is already visible with its distinctive church tower. The path soon becomes clearer. In keeping with our destination, the hike eventually keeps to the left at the signpost and heads straight through the village toward the bus stop at the Fähreck inn. Don’t miss a visit to the impressive St. Catherine’s Church in Trent 05.

We explore the shoreline of the Schaproder Bodden along an idyllic trail, where several beautifully situated rest areas invite us to linger. Dirt roads then lead us along the Rassower Strom. Finally, pastures and grain fields lead us back to Schaprode.▶ From Harbor 01 —where the ferries to the nearby island of Hiddensee also depart—we follow the main road around the picturesque St. Johannes Church and, a short while later, turn left at house number 26 (toward “Campingplatz”) onto a paved path. We ignore the nearby entrance to the Water Police grounds and immediately turn left (just before the open field) onto the grounds of a campground. Paths lead us the few meters down to the Bodden beach. After cooling off, we hike to the right and, at the end of the campground grounds, come upon a path that now runs directly along the coast. The route soon passes a seating area with a scenic view. Later, at an idyllically situated rest area 02, our trail turns into a road, along which we hike toward “Seehof/Rassower Bucht.” At the next signpost near a solitary house, the trail takes a sharp right (“Vaschvitz”). At the crossroads after about 1 km, the hike turns left and immediately reaches the Rassower Strom 03—which connects the Wieker Bodden in the west with the Breetzer Bodden in the east—right next to a seating area. We follow the shore path behind the gate to the right (“Vaschvitz”). Passing another rest area, we finally reach a red-and-white gate, where a covered seating area also provides a pleasant spot to rest. Here, the route turns right onto a road heading inland. Vast grain fields now accompany us all the way to the hamlet of Neuholstein 04. Just past farmstead No. 7 (about 200 m after the town entrance sign), the hike turns right onto a dirt road. The trail now winds through the scenic Schaprode countryside, passes an idyllically situated rest area, and reaches the outskirts of Poggenhof 05. Here, we follow the small country road to the left toward Schaprode, which is already visible in the distance. However, 600 m past the Poggenhof town exit sign, the trail turns right onto a dirt road. We reach Schaprode, follow our path to the main road, and pass the church on our way to the harbor 01.
