A multitude of hiking trails run through the federal state of Saxony. The charming countryside boasts the cascades of the Erzgebirge mountains, the densely wooded hills of the Vogtland region and the rugged mountains of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and the Sächsische Schweiz. In addition to the impressive nature, the state also has numerous cultural highlights to offer, with sights of rarity value and opportunities to stop for a typical Saxon meal along the hiking trails.

Hiking in the footsteps of the master, pausing where he paused, drawing where he drew: The Caspar David Friedrich Trail invites you to do just that. The 15 km long, mostly easy and scenically varied hiking trail leads from Krippen along the Mittelhangweg up to Schöna with the Kaiserkrone and then over the Wolfsberg and through Reinhardtsdorf back to the starting point. It is a route that the painter probably often used during his exile in Krippen between the spring and fall of 1813. His locations and motifs can still be found today based on the drawings he made at the time. The Caspar David Friedrich Trail is "Germany's most beautiful hiking trail" of the year 2025 (in the day trip category). The title is awarded every year by the hiking magazine.

It's true, there are regions that are better known and their long-distance hiking trails too. But that is precisely what makes the Kammweg so attractive. The whisper of fir trees instead of city noise, badgers instead of Dax and small villages instead of tourist hotspots. Good luck! The 288-kilometre ridge trail crosses the Ore Mountains and Vogtland. Whether you want to hike the trail in one go or just for a few days - the Kammweg is an all-rounder! The Kammweg gave us the chance to experience what we do. We were able to calm down and find our own rhythm in a modern age of speed. And the idea that faster is not necessarily better is slowly taking hold. Sabine M. and Joachim L.

ATTENTION: Important notice: Hiking trail at Heinrichsburg Castle in Diesbar-Seußlitz closed from 18.05.26 due to construction work Due to extensive construction work in the area of Heinrichsburg Castle in Seußlitz, the hiking trail (staircase) will be fully closed from 18.05. to probably 19.06.2026. Please note that the path to Heinrichsburg is a dead end during this time (the viewpoint at Heinrichsburg from the forest road is accessible). Detour route description from Diesbar to Seußlitz from "Schönster Weinsicht": Walk back to the large vineyard gate, then turn left along the path through the vineyards towards Seußlitz. At the "Eckholz" archaeological signpost 4, turn right through the gate and take the "Schmiedebergweg" meadow path towards Seußlitz. When you reach the forest road (opposite the castle park), turn left along the forest road. The detour ends below Heinrichsburg/at the exit to the castle park. Detour route description from Seußlitz to the "Schönste Weinsicht": You have arrived on Forststraße at the castle park exit/below Heinrichsburg Castle and now keep left. From the staircase with sandstone figures to Heinrichsburg Castle, walk approx. 100 m further along the forest road, then turn right up the meadow path "Schmiedebergweg" and follow the path to the gate at "Eckholz" with the archaeological plaque station 4. Here you turn left onto the path through the vineyards and walk to the vineyard gate. Before the large vineyard gate, you can turn right and take a detour to the "Schönste Weinsicht" or continue straight ahead without taking a detour (detour completed). You will also find corresponding detour signs on site. If you do not wish to ascend or descend via the Wiesenweg, you would have to take Radewitzer Straße in the direction of Forststraße without the vineyard.

The circular hike along the Königsweg combines the experience of a historic cultural landscape—with Moritzburg Hunting Lodge at its center—with the surrounding diverse landscape of ponds and forests, which was already cherished by the Saxon electors and kings. The “Königsweg” is a circular hiking trail within the Moritzburg cultural landscape and one of the 12 favorite hiking trails in Dresden Elbland. The approximately 11-km route is easy, nearly flat, and accessible. The trail is signposted in both directions. We recommend starting toward the Käthe Kollwitz House.

Forecast for Saxony

Where can you go hiking in Saxony?

In Saxony there are many paths that invite you to hike through the beautiful countryside. In addition to the famous Sächsische Schweiz in the Elbsandsteingebirge and the Erzgebirge, hikers can easily find the right tour in the Vogtland, the Zittau Mountains and the Lusatian Lakeland. With so much on offer, there are hiking trails for every fitness level and plenty to discover.

This is what makes hiking in the Vogtland and the Erzgebirge so special.

This also makes hiking with the family an exciting and entertaining experience. Children are particularly happy about the many themed trails that have been laid out throughout the state of Saxony. How about a trip to Hohnstein in Saxon Switzerland, for example, where you can hike along the Punch and Judy trail and enjoy the view from Hohnstein Castle?

While hiking in Saxony, it is a must to visit Dresden and Leipzig. The two historic cities are only 100 kilometres apart.
