The best Schauinsland in the Innsbruck WestAs the eastern cornerstone of the Kühtai or Northern Sellrain Mountains, Rosskogel offers a fantastic view, especially of the Innsbruck central area. From there, its pointed silhouette already stands out, making the mountain a popular climb. Specifically, the most beautiful ascent route, the North Ridge, naturally requires an experienced mountaineer. We can even enrich the tour with two small extras: one is Kögele (also called Sellrainer Sonnberg) – a worthwhile alternative for less experienced hikers – and the other is the extensive summit of Rangger Köpfl, which near the popular Rosskogel hut offers an easily accessible lodge in the Inn valley.

Extensive valley route from Oberperfuss to OberhofenThose who do not automatically think of mountain hikes when venturing into the heart of Tyrol can also discover attractive routes at lower altitudes. One of these is the path named after the cartographer Peter Anich (1723–66) between Oberperfuss and Oberhofen. Anich lived in Oberperfuss and became famous mainly for the "Atlas Tyrolensis", one of the most significant scientific achievements of his time. The route, measuring a total of five hours on foot, offers beautiful views from the picturesque mid-mountain terraces south of the Inn. The focus is on the southwestern corner of the Karwendel and the Mieming Chain with the dominant Hohe Munde.

The Rosskogel marks the eastern end of the Kühtai Mountains and is a striking landmark visible from the Innsbruck basin. From its eastern summit, there is a fantastic view in all directions. We also enjoy a magnificent view of the Inn Valley from the Kögele, which is easier to climb. > The Oberperfuss mountain railways run in three sections up to the Rangger Köpfl. Unfortunately, the upper section does not operate reliably. For this reason, we begin our hike at the 01Sulzstich midway station, follow the road, and turn right at a left-hand bend (with a bench). We can follow a forest trail for a short distance, then the path climbs very steeply along the left edge of the ski slope. This way, we reach the popular 02Rosskogelhütte relatively quickly. We cross the inviting terrace and can now either walk out along a bend in the alpine road or follow a beaten path that winds uphill to the right of a cross with a bench at the edge of the forest. At the next fork in the trail, we follow the alpine road to the left and catch our first glimpse of our two summit goals: the Kögele on the left and the pyramid-shaped Rosskogel on the right. Enjoying the views, we follow the alpine road, taking in the beautiful alpine pastures, and hike toward the Krimpenbachsattel on a gentle incline. There, we keep to the left and soon reach the (unmanned) 03Krimpenbachalm. We follow the signs to the Rosskogel and may have to take a short detour if pasture fences are in place. Around the Liechter Bach, which we cross without a bridge, horses and cows graze idyllically. Our route for the rest of the ascent is clearly visible, leading us over a broad, ridgeline. Along the way, be sure to turn around every now and then to take in the magnificent view of the Inn Valley, Innsbruck, and the Karwendel peaks between the Reither Spitze and the Nordkette. At a fork in the trail (the left path leads directly to the Kögele in 30 minutes), we continue straight ahead, pass an impressively tall stone pyramid, and hike further toward the southwest. Above us rises the rocky eastern flank of the Rosskogel with its summit cross glinting silver in the sun. After climbing over two small ridges, we find ourselves in a hollow and, following a final ascent, reach the 04Schartl. Here, we keep to the right toward the summit and traverse the grass-covered southern slopes of the Rosskogel on a gentle ascent. At the next fork in the trail on a ridge, we climb to the right up to a saddle. Turning right again, it’s not far to the summit cross on the eastern peak of the 05Rosskogel. What a fantastic 360-degree view! To the south, we overlook the entire Lüsener Valley all the way to the Lüsener Glacier and the striking Fernerkogel to its right. Across the Kalkkögel to the southeast, the view extends to the Hintertux Glacier. Back at the 04Schartl, we now carefully and attentively follow a very narrow path through the steep, grass-covered southern slopes of the rocky eastern ridge. We reach the Rifflkreuz with its bench and signpost—here, the Sellrainer Höhenweg joins the Kammweg from the right. Before the descent (signpost), there’s a short climb up to the summit cross of the 06Kögele. Back at the signpost, a trail leads us through the western slope of the Kögele back to the 03Krimpenbachalm. At the Krimpenbachsattel, we now head straight ahead and follow a farm road for a little over 1 km—with little incline—to the 07Rangger Köpfl. The beautiful view to the north is somewhat marred by the fenced-in transmission tower, but from the weather cross with a bench, we enjoy an unobstructed view northward toward the Mieminger Range and the Karwendel. If the cable car is operating, we can end our hike at the mountain station. If the top section is closed, there’s no choice but to descend via the steep ski slope first to the 02Rosskogelhütte and from there down the ascent trail to the 01middle station.
