Right from the start, we enjoy the wonderful view of the Stralsund skyline with its three large brick churches, the old warehouse buildings at the harbor, and the modern Ozeaneum across the Strelasund. Then we follow the Bodden coast past several swimming spots and finally reach the medieval Holy Cross Chapel in Bessin, where it’s nice to take a break in the shade of a chestnut tree.> We begin our tour at the small harbor in Altefähr 01 and then head toward the elevated brick church of St. Nikolai, which was first mentioned in 1325. The tower structure atop the bright red roof was built around 1913. However, the oldest parts of this beautiful sacred building still preserved today date back to the 15th century. Inside, the ceiling paintings in the choir, medieval murals, and several ship models are particularly impressive. The bike path signs now guide us toward “Bessin” on Barnkevitzer Weg. Immediately at the town exit sign, the route stays on the bike path to the left. The paved path leads along the edge of the fields to the Bodden coast, where the hike turns right. We immediately pass the first sandy swimming spot 02 and come by numerous places to sit. The tour follows the coastline and, at a fork in the trail, reaches the covered rest area Sundblick 03. We stay on the shore of the Strelasund for now, but then—not far from a navigational marker—we follow the right turn of our clearly marked trail inland. Shortly thereafter, we reach a signposted T-intersection in the midst of scenic fields. Here, we turn right (“Bessin, Zum Heiligen Kreuz”). In the tiny village of Bessin 04, the route passes by the impressive Zum Heiligen Kreuz Chapel—a late-Gothic octagonal brick structure. It was donated in 1482 by Stralsund’s mayor, Matthias Darne, for the residents of the village, which at the time consisted of 10 farms. Benches in the shade of a chestnut tree invite you to take a break here. The winding main path leads us out of the village. The road now runs through vast fields, which turn a brilliant yellow in the spring when the rapeseed is in bloom. At another T-intersection, the hike turns right. Even along the B 96, we continue to the right on the bike path next to the heavily trafficked road. After just 500 m, we turn right onto the small road toward “Poppelvitz.” Immediately after the village of 05, the path turns into a paved trail that now runs between several wind turbines. At the trail junction beyond them, the hike veers left and heads toward Altefähr 01, which is already visible, where you can wrap up the tour at the harbor.
