Round tour on wide, scenic heightsThe Montagut is only the second highest peak on the upper course of the Riu Gaià, but certainly the most scenic. Its wide heights are deserted, the numerous castles and proud farms stretch out only ruin walls; only the massive castle church Sant Jaume de Montagut still stands defiantly on the heights. Our solitary hike takes us on forest roads and narrow paths to two peaks and over the shoulders of the mountain.

Past traces on deserted heightsThis hike in the border area of Alt Camp and Conca de Barberà offers a variety of impressions: Vallespinosa, crouched in a narrow gorge, presents itself as a pretty, fully restored village, whose natural stone houses with their thick walls have a real Alpine feel. Selmella, on the other hand, lies completely abandoned in a magnificent panoramic location on a high ridge, with the ruins of the village, the half-ruined church and the castle towering above it giving a hint of its former glory. However, the gloomy Castell de Saborella, which dates back to the 13th century, has nothing more to offer apart from its two defiant fortified towers and its privileged location. On the way back, however, the gorge is an area of reconquest: nature gradually reclaims the once artfully layered field walls and the forest spreads out over the little terraces that stretch up the slopes to the rocks. The hike also offers a wealth of flora and fauna.

The Gaià River and its valley were for over two centuries borderlands between Christians and Muslims, and in fact have the highest density of medieval fortifications in Catalonia. Along this circular route, which starts from the small town of Vallespinosa, you can enjoy both the landscape and the historical heritage. The technical difficulty level is moderate.
