Long distance hike with lots of nature and city The Würm is the second largest flowing water body in Munich after the Isar. This nearly 40 km long river, which gave its name to the Würm Ice Age and after which the Starnberg Lake was formerly named Würmsee, runs through interesting landscapes where riverside paths and forests provide plenty of variety. Since there is no path along the Würm in the first section, we hike from Starnberg via Rieden to Mühlthal, meet the river there, and then stay close to it all the way to Munich. The many churches and castles along our route show how important it used to be to be located near flowing water – today the old Würm villages Planegg, Gräfelfing, Lochham, and others have long since merged into one large suburb, where the Würm at most still plays a role for leisure and recreation. It is also interesting that Pasing, now fully incorporated into Munich, was an independent town until 1938.
