Along ancient alpine trails across the vast viddaThe area northeast of Lillehammer is characterized by its seemingly endless plateau (vidda). At an altitude of just over 1,000 m, vast expanses of moorland stretch out, interspersed with mountain peaks. In earlier times, the vidda was used as summer pastureland, as evidenced today by the countless alpine farm buildings, some of which are still used for agricultural purposes. The first part of the hike described here follows the old “Assistentråket”—a path that milk inspectors used to travel from the mountain pastures (seter) near Hita to those near Lake Hornsjøen. They weighed the milk produced by the cows and goats and took milk samples.

Mountain Church in ØyerfjelletThe Åstkyrkja is named after the rock formation that supposedly gives the summit the appearance of a church. Every summer, an open-air church service is held at the scenic "Åst Church," with a view across the Øyerfjell hills to the Rondane and Jotunheimen mountain ranges.

Goppollfjellet, overlooking the Gudbrandsdalen valley, is the highest point of the historic Goppollen alpine pasture landscape in the border region between the municipalities of Ringebu and Øyer; Høgtinden (1,170 m) is the highest peak, offering spectacular views.▶ Until the 20th century, Goppollen was one of the largest alpine pasture areas in Norway. Today, the highlands in the border region between Øyer and Ringebu are crisscrossed by numerous hiking, mountain biking, and ski trails, and boats can be rented at the larger lakes. Alpine farming has all but come to a standstill, but many names and huts serve as reminders of the “seter,” including the starting point Krekke seter 01, located just before the end of the Goppollvegen toll road. From the parking lot, a trail leads southeastward up into the scenic, treeless highlands. Since Høgtinden is a popular destination, numerous other routes join the hiking trail; the most important trail junction for us is a connecting trail 02 to the long-distance hiking trail Rondanestien, which runs a bit further east. Shortly thereafter, the trail—which up to this point has been climbing steadily—reaches an unnamed hilltop with a panoramic view, then descends to a small lake, where the final push to Høgtinden 03 begins. To the north, the view stretches as far as the highest peaks of the Ringebufjellet, beyond which the two-thousand-meter peaks of the Rondane Mountains rise; to the south, Mount Åstkyrkja greets us from across the marshes. On the slopes of Høgtinden, two headwater streams of the Tromsa River originate; the river flows into the Gudbrandsdalslågen at Fåvang: On the southern flank, the Fjellbekken springs forth, and on the eastern flank, an unnamed stream—our return route runs through its boggy valley. From the summit, the trail descends southeast toward a lake, follows the shore to the left, and turns diagonally right at the northern bay toward the Rondanestien 04 long-distance hiking trail: It follows the boggy stream valley downhill (northward), crosses the stream at Pengsholshøgda, and reaches a fork shortly thereafter: Here, we hike straight ahead along the connecting trail on the slope and, a short while later, come to the familiar junction with connecting trail 02. We return to the starting point at the Krekke seter 01 alpine pasture via the same route as on the ascent.
