Sagaøya Herføl is the southernmost and second smallest of the eastern islands that the Hvaler ferry stops at. Linnekleppen, the rocky knoll with the distinctive sea mark facing the sea to the southwest, is the island's highest point. The name Herføl means shelter, harbor, or refuge for the army. For as long as there have been seafarers in the area, Herføl has held significant strategic importance.

On Søndre Sandøy, we are about 110 permanent residents and share the island with around 450 cabin owners. As the largest of the eastern Hvaler islands, the island offers rich plant life, varied landscapes, and beautiful beaches. Its location at the outer part of the Oslofjord has given Søndre Sandøy an exciting history, with traces of settlement from the Bronze Age and stone carving activities from the 1880s. The ferry calls at Gravningsund and Nedgården, where Café Oline is the island's natural meeting place. Leave the car and experience the island on foot or by bike.

About 15 km south of Fredrikstad lies the Hvaler archipelago, one of the most impressive areas of the Norwegian archipelago coast. The side facing the sea has been designated a national park, making Ytre Hvaler Norway’s first marine national park. On the main island of Kirkeøy, accessible via bridges, the nature trail Kyststien (Coastal Trail) through enchanting coves and picturesque sandy beaches. > From the bus stop/parking lot in front of the ferry terminal at Skjærhalden, the trail first heads southwest to the roundabout and continues straight ahead along the signposted coastal trail “Kyststien.” Passing Indre Havn and, after another harbor basin, turn right uphill and into the fairy-tale coniferous forest of the Prestegårdskogen Nature Reserve. Continuing south along the blue “dot markers” of the coastal trail, the path winds down to the water’s edge along rocks that are quite slippery in places, just before reaching 02Homlungen Fyr, which stands atop a small offshore island. The trail follows boulders and stepping stones, briefly becoming quite adventurous as it winds along some “wet spots” on the seashore, then becomes rocky again; at the fork before Storesand Camping, turn left toward the 03Sjursholmen peninsula. This section of the trail becomes increasingly spectacular and offers some stunning views as it winds through rocky terrain, where you may need to use your hands at times. The trail now leads along the rocky coast to the picturesque sandy cove of 04Storesand, the region’s most popular and largest sandy beach. Heading north, a forest trail leads us past the 05Hvaler kirke turnoff to the long, grassy sandy cove of 06Ørekroken. It’s also very popular with surfers and kitesurfers and, in general, a wonderful place that creates a special atmosphere with its tall coastal grass set against the idyllic coniferous forest. After a short stretch along the road through the small coastal settlement of Ørekroken, the coastal trail heads southwest toward the headland at 07Rødshue, adorned by a striking sculpture. Passing by more modern stone sculptures, the trail now leads through mixed forest in a northerly direction above the coast to the picnic area at 08Grønne Bakke. Before taking a breather at the wooden benches and tables, however, be sure to enjoy the view from the 09viewpoint on the rocky outcrop, located slightly higher up. It can be reached via a short, uphill forest path, then up wooden stairs, and finally over the smooth rock. Return to the small picnic area and follow the same route back to the 05Hvaler kirke junction. Before reaching the Rødshue headland, a trail on the left offers a shortcut. It keeps to the left (straight ahead) toward Road 10(Storveien 108) and, just before the road, turns right onto the forest path, which runs to the right of the road for a while through the enchanting coniferous forest and then past Hvaler Rådhus toward Skjærhalden.Continue straight ahead here, turning left onto Prestehavna at the end, and after joining the outbound route, turn left again to return to the starting point (alternatively, follow Storveien), in front of the Skjærhaldenferry terminal.
