Safety information
The trip goes through terrain with lots of rocks, so good shoes are recommended. Bring swimwear if you're out on a nice weather day.Roadbook
Herfølrenna Kro is located right next to Herføl Marina.
Here you can enjoy good food and plenty of ice cream from the little pier shop – full rights. There is also a small grocery store beside the building if you need it.
In the old general store just behind the harbor, På Posten has moved in from its former premises in the old post office.
At På Posten you get the world's best cinnamon rolls with coffee. They have beautiful interior items plus many other unique things you won't find anywhere else.
Herfølsåta / Røsset
We follow Henry A. Larsen's road inward on the island, and the sign continues to Herfølsåta or Røsset. When you reach the open area, ascend the hill to see the burial mound.
The large Bronze Age burial mound is a highly prioritized cultural monument and is classified as a national monument. It sits high and free, truly worthy of a great chief.
Now we proceed to Kaffebukta. We recommend returning to Henry A. Larsen's road and continuing inland from the road.
Rognhavn and Kaffebukta
We follow Henry A Larsen's road inland on the island. Midway on the island, we turn right towards Rognhavn.
Follow the path all the way down to the water.
Here we find Kaffebukta, a popular recreational area with swimming opportunities. Here you also find the island's only restrooms, camping is allowed, and there is a fire pit.
At Kaffebukta, several mooring points are set up on the rocks to make docking by boat easy.
Next, the trip goes to the beautiful beach Grønnbauen. To get there, you must return to Rognhavn and follow the path to the right, through the forest, and soon you will see a lovely beach before you.
Grønnbauen
Grønnbauen is a favored bathing spot; maybe it's time for a swim?
Not far away, you can see Linnekleppen. To reach it, you either must walk all the way back to the road or cross the boulders and up the hill.
Linnekleppen
Coming along Henry A Larsen's road, you see a sign for Linnekleppen well inside the island.
Linnekleppen, with its distinctive sea mark, proudly rises toward the sea. This is the highest point on the island, at 31 meters. The sea mark is 7 meters tall and was built in 1878.
Climbing the tower has been a test of manhood. Remember that you must get down again too.
Now we'll look at the island's most special giant's kettle, the cathedral. Descend from Linnekleppen on the backside and walk over the boulders towards the sea and you'll see it quite quickly.
The cathedral / church
Out here at Hvaler Deep, we have already seen quite a few giant's kettles, but the one you will see now is very special.
The giant's kettle has many names; the cathedral, the church, or the whale gap. It is beautifully situated as a large Gothic arch with a water mirror in front.
Now you should go to Langrøsset. The easiest way there is to return to the path below Linnekleppen. Go into the forest a little way. Langrøsset is on the left side inside the forest.
Langrøsset
Inside the wooded area behind the tower lies Langrøsset, also signposted from the road in the north. This is one of the country's largest long burial mounds with a clear stone chamber in the north.
This was the trip's last stop, and the circular route ends at the ferry dock. Continue along the path until you reach Henry A Larsen's road. Follow the road back to the harbor. Take a break at the inn before you take the boat back to Skjærhalden or on to one of the other islands.
Thanks for the trip!
Public transport
Hvaler ferryThe Hvaler ferry docks at the guest harbor on Herføl. The first thing that meets you when you disembark the ferry is "Herfølrenna Kro" and "På posten".
Just a few meters further in is also the island's playground, for those who need to burn off some extra energy before the island tour.
You can find Hvaler ferry departures here. Remember to book your spot on the boat in advance.
Parking
If you come to Hvaler by car, we recommend parking at Hvaler town hall and walking down to the ferry at Skjærhalden.Coordinates
