Coastal Hike with Dunes, Beach, and PromenadeAlthough the North Sea coast between Blankenberge and Ostend (Oostende) is densely developed, much like other parts of Flanders, it still offers lovely stretches of dunes, heathland, forest, and a continuous sandy beach. This loop hike can be shortened at any time by taking the Kusttram. The starting and ending points, as well as De Haan, have a long tradition of tourism; both developed in the 19th century from fishing villages into seaside resorts under English influence. Blankenberge’s 350-meter-long pier was built in 1893 as the first of its kind on the European mainland. The port city of Ostend, with around 300 restaurants, is known as the “Queen of Belgian Seaside Resorts.” The name stems from the fact that the town was located at the eastern end of the former island of Testerep.

The ferry between Oosteroever and Westeroever is free. The children loved it. Maria Hendrikapark is also very nice. The alternative route to the ferry goes through the industrial area and has a lot of traffic. Recorded on Feb 23, 2023 10:07:09

Dune and beach circuit at the Albert Einstein seaside resortDe Haan, with its charming French name Le-Coq-sur-Mer, stands out pleasantly from the predominantly concrete uniformity of the other Belgian seaside resorts thanks to its Art Nouveau villas. The former polder village surrounded by dunes was built around 1900 as a seaside resort for the wealthy in the Belle Époque. An imperial concession from 1889 regulated the building regulations and thus the basis for today's attractive townscape: only detached houses with surrounding greenery and Anglo-Norman architecture with a low number of storeys were permitted - such as the Villa Savoyarde, where Albert Einstein lived for six months in 1933 before emigrating to the USA. The circular walk covers the stretch of coast between De Haan and Wenduine with the beach and the largely wooded dune landscape.
