De Haan, with its charming French name Le-Coq-sur-Mer, stands out pleasantly from the predominantly concrete uniformity of the other Belgian seaside resorts thanks to its Art Nouveau villas. The former polder village surrounded by dunes was built around 1900 as a seaside resort for the wealthy in the Belle Époque. An imperial concession from 1889 regulated the building regulations and thus the basis for today's attractive townscape: only detached houses with surrounding greenery and Anglo-Norman architecture with a low number of storeys were permitted - such as the Villa Savoyarde, where Albert Einstein lived for six months in 1933 before emigrating to the USA. The circular walk covers the stretch of coast between De Haan and Wenduine with the beach and the largely wooded dune landscape.
100 m south of the Kusttram stop of the same name, we take the path leading south from the Zwarte Kiezel parking lot opposite the one-way street signs into the dune forest. With its sandy surface, this is more difficult to walk than the white and red marked asphalt path further south, but it offers more open dunes and less forest. After 150 m, turn left at a fork and then left again 250 m further on at the T-junction near the road. Turn right at the next two junctions, cross the road with streetcar tracks and continue straight ahead through the wooden gate on the other side.100 m after the road, turn left in front of a fenced pasture and continue straight ahead on a sandy path towards De Haan. After a barrier, we pass its Belle Époque villas and turn left at a 5-way junction into Bretoenselaan. After 100 m, a bench with a seated statue of Albert Einstein invites you to take a break and reflect on the theory of relativity. From the small park, the Normandielaan leads to the round center
