> In Gnadental, we head toward Winterrain; after about 200 m, we reachParking Lot 01. We follow the bike path along the valley, passing a barn, then continue toward Winterrain, following the blue-line trail markers. The trail then turns left, as marked, through a gate and heads towardthe Sailach Reservoir 02. There, take the path along the dam; turn right here onto a narrow forest trail that runs along the lake. The lake is a flood retention basin where the Bibers stream is dammed. Unfortunately, swimming is prohibited. At the end of the lake, we leave the forest (this is where the blue-line markings end), keep slightly to the left, and walk along the small paved road to the left toward the forest. Then turn right and follow the edge of the forest. On the next small crossroad, keep right, then turn left into the forest in the Biberstal valley. We walk for a long time through a beautiful old deciduous forest; after leaving the forest, we reach the campground and theNeumühlsee03 country inn. The lake is beautifully situated in the valley; here we can swim to our hearts’ content, fish, stop for a bite to eat, and have a barbecue (barbecue area). After our break, we continue strolling along the right shore of the lake; at the end of the lake, the bike path sign points right toward Goldbach, and we stroll through the valley along the stream. Once we arrive at the hamlet, we can still see parts of the 14th-century monastery. We walk along the road toward Beltersrot, passingGoldbachsee04; immediately afterward, we turn right onto the small road toward Laurach (now marked with a blue dot). After a few meters, at the “Yield” sign, we turn left onto a footpath between a pasture fence and the road. At the edge of the forest, we turn left and then immediately right again, following the markings, onto an uphill forest path. On the next small crossroad, we briefly turn right (unmarked) and then, following the blue dot markings again, turn left onto an uphill path leading to the foothills ofthe Mühlberg05. Later, on the small asphalt road crossing our path, take a few steps to the right; then our trail marker points to a forest path that leads us down to this small asphalt road. On it, we head left downhill tothe Kreuzstein06, a penitential cross or memorial stone from the 15th or 16th century. Here we keep to the right and hike through the forest. After leaving the forest, we keep left at the intersection and walk along the paved road towardWinterrain07, which is already visible. We walk through the hamlet, then back into the forest; to the right below, we can see the Sailach Reservoir through the trees. Once we’re back in the open, we head down into the valley and back to ourstarting point 01.

In 1245, Knight Konrad von Krautheim founded Gnadental Abbey as a Cistercian convent, primarily for the daughters of noble families. It was built as an early Gothic ashlar structure and a single-nave hall church with a simple, vaulted square choir. Of the original monastery complex, the church—with the abbess’s residence attached to it—and the west wing still stand today. Guided tours of the monastery can be arranged through the Evangelical Church.

> From the parking lot inUntersteinbach01, we head onto the main street, where we follow the red-line trail marker, HW 8, toward the “Wilfersberg/Waldenburg” sign. We walk through the pretty wine-growing village until the trail marker leads us up to the right. Then we turn left onto Haldenstraße, which, after passing through the residential area, winds steeply upward through the vineyards. Along the way, we enjoy great views of the landscape around Untersteinbach, with vineyards, forests, and farms. At the top, follow the red line to the left, past the houses. We hike along the edge of the forest and later through the forest until we reach a fork; now we turn right and head steeply uphill through a sunken path to theStrohberg02. At the top, follow the trail markers to the right onto a forest path. A short while later, we walk along this path past a “Trauf”—a high, vertically dropping rock face. Caution is advised here, as there is no railing. After a while, the trail marker directs us to the left onto a parallel forest path, where we continue to the right. To the left, we’re treated to several magnificent views of the Hohenlohe Plain. Then we cross the country road and arrive at the forest parking lot. We walk straight through the parking lot and leave our previous trail marker behind. We now enter theViehweide03 nature reserve. It’s best to walk on the right side through this vast meadow with its beautiful, sparse stand of trees. You’ll feel as if you’re in an English park landscape. After exploring, we return to the parking lot and turn right onto the forest path, again following the red line marking, HW 8. A short while later, we emerge from the forest, cross the country road, and on the other side, the Jagdhaussee invites us to take a break. We return to the country road and now follow the blue line to the left towardObersteinbach04. Our current trail marker leads us to the left at the entrance to the village and through the town. Then turn left again onto the street “Im Weiler”; at the fork, turn right past the water tower. Then, following the markings, turn left out into the open field. As we enter the forest, our trail marker changes to a blue cross with a directional sign for “Untersteinbach.” On the following cross-country path, turn left; shortly thereafter, opposite a hunting blind, turn left again onto a grassy path. As you exit the forest, turn right along the forest edge, then right again to reach the country road. Turn left onto this road, then right onto the road towardBüchelberg05. After a few meters, you’ll leave the blue cross markings behind and continue straight ahead following the red dot. At the left-hand curve, continue straight ahead toward Untersteinbach. You’ll come to a forest parking lot on the left; walk through it and you’ll find the red dot markings again. You’ll reach the edge of the forest. Follow the markings along the edge; later, you’ll have a beautiful view of Büchelberg. In the forest, we keep to the left at a fork and head downhill. When we come to a cross-trail, the trail marker changes back to the red line, HW 8. Following the well-marked trail, we return to our starting point inUntersteinbach01.
