Three days through the mountains of Skarvan og Roltdalen National ParkThe mountain areas of Skarvan og Roltdalen National Park rise in southeastern Trøndelag with Fongen/Lopmesvaerie (1441 m) as the highest peak. The park is named after the mountain range Skarvan/Tjohkeleh, which culminates at Storskarven (1171 m), as well as Roltdalen, the largest roadless forest and alpine valley in southern Trøndelag. The park was established in 2004 to protect wildlife, extensive old coniferous forests, large peatland areas, and the vibrant Sami culture with its reindeer husbandry. Despite areas not being completely spared from human influence, the protected zones have largely remained free from human construction activities and associated infrastructure. However, the protection benefiting the wild animals and reindeer also brings new dangers: the growing popularity of the region among hikers.

On a discovery tour at the foot of Mannfjellet/KraeviesgealtaThe Selbo Kobberverk mining company, which was active from 1713 to 1895, operated several copper mines in the municipality of Meråker, evidence of which can still be seen today. In addition to the remains of mining settlements and spoil heaps, Mannfjellgruva is one of the few directly accessible former copper mines. It is located on the edge of Skarvan og Roltdalen nasjonalpark, which can be accessed on foot from various directions. From Mannfjellgruva, a marked trail leads up to Fonnfjellet, which offers a panoramic view as far as the Trondheimsfjorden and Sweden.

The hike leads into Skarvan og Roltdalen National Park, home to some of the oldest Iron Age mining settlements. Due to the great importance of mining, settlements for miners sprang up in the 18th and 19th centuries. The national park is part of the Sami reindeer grazing area known as Saanti sitje/Essand. With a little luck, you may spot reindeer there while hiking. The landscape is characterized by ancient coniferous forests, high mountains, and vast marshes. For a long time, the marshes meant hikers would end up with wet feet. However, wooden boardwalks have now been installed on most of the marshy sections. This means you can now reach the summit with dry feet and at a brisk pace. During the record-breaking summer of 2025, the water at the confluence of the Sildra and Sona rivers had warmed up so much that taking a refreshing dip there was no problem at all.> We leave the huge parking lot at the end of 01Sunndalsvegen behind us. We follow a hiking trail reinforced with sand heading south. It is also signposted toward Storskarven. Then a wooden boardwalk begins, leading over the marshy ground. On the less steep terrain, another 02 hiking trail joins ours from the right. The trail crosses a small bridge and passes through a forest until we reach the border of the national park. Above the tree line, large boulders occasionally line the path. The original trail ends, and we turn onto a 03newly constructed path. Behind the hill, slightly to the left, we can soon make out today’s destination for the first time. Crossing flat, worn rocks, we reach the next 04trail junction, where we turn slightly to the left. A well-trodden path leads over a mountain ridge, past a secondary summit, and across a plateau to the summit of 05 Storskarven. From there, you have a beautiful view of the Trondheimsfjord to the west. The return trip follows the same route back to 01 Sunndalsvegen.
