Circular hike to a pilgrimage church high above the LurnfeldAbove the wide valley floor of the Lurnfeld lies the small, white pilgrimage church Maria Hohenburg, visible from afar, on the sunny slope. If we are on the trail at the right time, we can also experience the "Wunderblume von Lendorf" (Miracle Flower of Lendorf) in full bloom on our circular hike; this yellow rhododendron only occurs here in Austria.

Great tour to the southern corner pillar of the Reißeck groupIf you travel up the Drau Valley from Villach towards Spittal, one mountain captivates the view alongside the characteristic, glaciated Hochalmspitze: it is the Gmeineck with its wide, steep slopes, which are also popular tour destinations in winter. Although you can drive by car almost up to the Kohlmaier hut, the Gmeineck remains a fairly demanding summit target even for experienced mountaineers due to the large altitude difference and is therefore never overcrowded.

▶ We start in Obervellach 01 in the town center at the AAT info point, go down the main street, turn left just before the tennis courts, make a right curve with the asphalt road and follow the marking towards Gatternighof. The road rises slightly, soon we leave the asphalt to the left and immediately turn right onto a rocky path that initially leads steeper up into the forest, parallel to the road running below on the right. Continuing uphill we meet the gravel path again on the road, initially stay left, then cross it and shortly before a sharp right curve meet the asphalt again. We go straight ahead and walk on a gravel forest path to the signposted Mölltalblick. In a right curve, with a great view of the railway viaduct, we climb up to a sunny and scenic meadow area. Along the edge of the forest, we reach an asphalt road and a farm and shortly thereafter a beautiful viewing veranda at the Gatternighof 02 (overnight accommodation). Past a small chapel, we are surprised at the next farm by a crocodile sculpture attached to the house wall and shortly thereafter by a nice fountain on the path. The magnificent panorama trail passes other farms and after a sharp right curve through a farmyard steeply downhill. The asphalt ends and the winding agricultural path leads us over a railway bridge (Oberfalkenstein station). Then again on asphalt in hairpin bends downwards, we follow straight ahead the AAT sign into a private path, leave the asphalt and pass under the railway viaduct twice and reach a fork in front of the Niederfalkenstein Castle 03. At the fork, we turn left and continue downhill, soon back on asphalt, which we leave before a right curve to the left on a grassy path with a slight incline. Along the edge of the forest, we reach the houses of Gappen briefly on asphalt again. Past the Kressnig (rest) place we walk with an open view of the valley to Penk and further to Litzeldorf. In a left curve, we leave the asphalt and continue straight ahead on a field path, to the right a rest area with a fountain. We go around a house and turn right, climbing steeper into the forest. The Danielsberg circular hiking trail splits, we stay right (hunting trail) and follow the AAT sign and the forest path, which winds uphill in curves, past feeding places and info boards. After partly steeper and rockier sections, we meet directly under the Herkuleshof 04 on the asphalt road and are shortly thereafter at the AAT info point. Past the sculptures placed behind the inn and the small pond, we walk below the church on a narrow path into the forest (AAT and climbing garden marking). The rooty path leads downhill in curves, past information boards and finally with a wonderful view of the valley to the first houses of Oberkolbnitz 05. On asphalt, we pass the small Sandbichlkirche church, turn left and immediately turn right onto a meadow path, which leads us along stone walls into the village. Past Stanerbräu, we go in a right curve to the federal road, which we cross via a bridge, then cross the Möll and follow the signposted bike path to the left. Under the large water pipes, we march flat to the reservoir, directly along the shore, and after a bridge keep right. Straight ahead, the embankment path runs along the Sachsenweg canal, until the AAT marking sharply directs us left. On asphalt downhill, we cross the Möll and follow the AAT signage. Past the culture house Mühldorf 06 and the church, it goes over the federal road and left towards Barbarossaschlucht to the Alte Volksschulstraße. Via Fellhauer Straße into Mühlbichler Weg, then we pass under the Tauern railway and turn left, follow the asphalted road slightly uphill to the square where once stood Klenzer Castle and which is designated as a meeting place for Barbarossa’s followers. Shortly thereafter, we leave the wide path and turn right onto an ascending forest path, past information boards about the Barbarossa story. The increasingly rocky path rises noticeably, and we reach the entrance to the Barbarossa Gorge, which begins with a wooden railing. Over rock steps and two grilled bridges, alongside rock walls, waterfalls and many information boards, we reach at the upper end of the gorge the Barbarossatisch 07, which is overshadowed by a rock roof and decoratively enclosed by shields. In a right curve, we traverse flat along the forest slope, at a clearing we encounter a gravel road that soon becomes asphalted and leads to Göriach. At the fire brigade, we keep left, pass the inn Zauchner and cross through the village. After the village end, we stay right at the road fork until at position Kappen we turn left and follow Muttergottesweg/Hohenburger Weg. 15 minutes later, we are at position Black Madonna 08. At the next left curve, we go straight ahead, follow the sign towards Hohenburg and continue climbing on the scenic panorama trail along the edge of the forest. After a left curve, we meet asphalt, to the left appears the Hohenburg Inn and behind it towers the Hohenburg Pilgrimage Church 09, which we climb up steep stone steps. Again past the inn – which does not offer overnight stays – we follow the asphalt road straight ahead, initially slightly downhill, then climbing again up to Hühnersberg, to Kolmwirt Inn 10 and the AAT info point.
