There was a late onset of winter in March when we tried this route, to say in advance, not the ideal conditions. Start was at the Edelstein Hunsrück golf course and for more than the first half of the route followed the signage "Traumschleife Kirschweiler Festung". After about 5 km, then deviate from the marked route to the left (SW) and turn right onto the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig and uphill to the "Fortress", which is, however, "only" an impressive rock offering a nice view northwards to the Steinbachtal dam. Continue on a wide path to Kirschweiler and uphill through the village back to the golf course.

Right at the start, the trail offers a highlight. Wooden walkways lead through the Ortelsbruch Nature Reserve. The mysterious-looking rocks of the Kirschweiler Fortress, winding paths, massive Rosselhalden outcrops of Taunus quartzite, and the medieval Wildenburg with its game reserve and wildcat breeding station are further highlights of this truly wild and romantic tour.▶ Coming from the center of Morbach, after about a 2-km approach, we reach the Saar-Hunsrück Trail at the edge of the Ortelsbruch 01. From there, the route first follows a wide path, then a boardwalk about 500 m long, through the nature reserve. Then turn left onto a wide path, but take the right fork immediately afterward and head uphill. Continue to a forest meadow and then along a nature trail. Cross an asphalt road and head steeply uphill. Pass a sensory bench and head back downhill. Pass a rest area by a forest pond and follow trails to the Brückelchesbach. Head downhill along the stream to an intersection with a rest area. First turn right uphill, then left downhill. Soon the SHS trail merges with the “Traumschleife Köhlerpfad” loop.Pass the outskirts of Langweiler 02 and a sensory bench with a view of the Steinbach Dam. Cross a road and head to the water reservoir. Now turn right, leaving the “Traumschleife” trail. Walk through open fields, cross the L 162, and descend to the Klarebach.Walk through the valley to the large Krahlochweiher 03. Along the way, you’ll pass the Krahloch Geopark. Before the nearby entrance to the geopark, turn right onto a trail and head downhill. Cross a gravel path to the Idarbach and turn left. Cross an old stone bridge, keeping left as you cross the B 422, and head up a forest road. Turn right at the hilltop. Take the cross path behind the “Die Rotbuche” information sign to the left. Take the next right fork and follow a wide forest road uphill. At the fork on the hill, turn left. In the right-hand curve at the fork signpost, turn left onto a soft forest path and continue uphill on a rocky trail through old-growth forest. We cross the rugged Kirschweiler Fortress 04 on the Silberich, pass the Steinbachsperre viewpoint, leave the fortress heading southeast on a narrow, winding path, and come to a cross path. Turn left here. Behind the viewpoint overlooking the Rosshalde on the opposite side of the valley, the SHS veers right onto a trail and leads down into the Idarbach Valley. Cross the K 20, the Idarbach, and the B 422, then turn left. Immediately turn right again and head up a forest path. Now the signs for the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig guide the way again. The trail winds steeply upward in switchbacks up the Rosselhalde 05. At the intersection on the hill, turn right and continue uphill on a less steep slope. Finally, we hike along a wide forest road. When it slopes slightly downhill, the trail marker leads right onto an ascending path and toward Wildenburg 06. A 2-kilometer access trail leads to Kempfeld.
